🏈 Remember the 13-year old that Lane Kiffin offered a scholarship to?

David Sills is the kid that got a scholarship offer, at quarterback, from USC (Lane Kiffin) when he was just 13 years old. I remember hearing about this kid (on this site even) back then but really have never thought about it again until I found out he was now one of the top receivers in the entire country. His story is freaking insane.

So, you have a kid hear who is a pretty talented athlete and his dad has tons of money. So, he sends him to a QB Guru that works with some of the top NFL QBs in the country. The result is a 13-year old kid that is wowing college coaches on tape.

Kiffin was so impressed that he offered him a USC scholarship at just 13 years old, which Sills accepted and verbally committed to USC at just 13.

Fast forward a couple of years and he starts at his high school as an eighth grader at Red Lion Academy. As a freshman, he throws for over 2,300 yards and 28 TD and was named a U.S. Air Force All-American.

Then, things get crazy. His school actually stops having a football program, so his father actually co-founds his own high school (Eastern Christian Academy). Every signle enrolled boy in the school that first year was on the football team. It was an online-only school with all teachers being virtual teachers. It got at on of controvery (think of it as being a virtual IMG Academy).

Anyway as a sophomore, the school was unable to get accredited by the state until late in the year, so they only played three games.

As a junior, Sills ends up breaking his knuckle on his throwing hand early in the season but kept playing. As a result, it completely ruinined his throwing mechanics. The QB guru he had been working with, Steve Clarkson, said that Sills had the best mechanics of any QB he had ever worked with before the injury (including NFL QBs) but the injury absolutely ruined his mechanics and he was never able to be retaught.

He started relying on his athleticism after the injury and then heading into his senior season he breaks his ankle and missing almost the entire season.

After Lane Kiffin was fired, Steve Sarkisian told Sills that he would honor the scholarship offer but Sills go thte filling he wasn't Sark's man (especially because he was recruiting both Ricky Town and Sam Darnold at hte same time). Sills decommitted from USC and ended up going to West Virginia.

As a freshman, he competed for the starting QB job but ended up getting beaten out. West Virginia planned to redshirt him, so they ended up moving him to the scout team as a receiver (because of his athleticism) but were so impressed that they burned his red shirt and put him on the field as a receiver.

He ended up showing flashes of greatness as a receiver, despite never playing the position, and ended up scoring the game winning touchdown catch in the bowl game for West Virginia that year.

West Virginia gave him a chance to win the starting job again in the spring but after losing the coaches told him they wanted him to play at WR. He said that he still wanted to play QB and wasn't ready to give that up yet. So, he transferred to El Camino Junior College. Dana Holgerson told him that, no matter what, a spot would be open for him at receiver if he changed his mind.

At El Comino, Sills started at QB in 2016 but he only threw for a little over 1,600 yards and 16 TD and was much more reliant on his running ability because of the injuries to his hand and regression in his mechanics over the years. Not a single DI school offered him a scholarship.

Dana Holgerson called Sills and told him that he still had a spot at WV at receiver for him and Sills agreed.

As a junior, Sills caught 60 passes for 980 yards and 18 touchdowns in the first year he was ever a starter at receiver. He led the entire country in receiving touchdowns, was a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award and was a second-team All-American.

He's coming back in 2018 as a senior with a chance to possibly become an NFL receiver.

Dont want to read all that, check this out:

So, you're saying that if a qb can't throw very well, but has great athleticism, then he may be able to switch to receiver and get into the NFL ? Hmm...maybe a certain qb and his daddy should read about this.

I just don't see it with Jalen. First I don't see dad and Jalen ever being convinced he's not a QB... Secondly, I don't see him as that type of athlete. He's got a controlled explosiveness... It's more about strength and balance than the flat out speed that receivers have. And don't see the super quick feet RB's have although he is very deceptive and allusive. It's QB or bust and barring another injury to Tua next year, he will get his shot to impress again at QB at _____ University.

Agreed. Jalen is very athletic, but not explosive. I have beat the drum for him to be an H back. He would be awesome in a role like Baron Huber/ Jalston Fowler was. I don't know how good of a pass catcher Jalen is, but I'm sure he could fix that. No doubt in my mind, that Jalen could embrace that role and go on to the NFL like Fowler did.

Well.....there are millions $ to be made in nfl...JH ain’t going to make them as a QB.....he may lead Bama to a NC this year.....and next...but those are the end of his QB days
When Bama opened against Va Tech in '09 they were led by Tyrod Taylor at QB. He's a guy that never completed over 60% on the season, passing.

When the Tide played them there was no concern about Taylor at QB other than mobility. Yet, in the end, he's still on an NFL roster.

Did you ever think Taylor would make the NFL at his position?

Only with either the Bills or the Browns :-)
As I recall reading, or hearing on ESPN, he got a few starts with the Bills, didn't he?

Think back to '09 again. That was the same year we had Arkansas fans telling us how good Mallett was going to be on the professional level at QB. Yet, Mallett didn't turn out to be the QB most thought he'd be at the next level.

Do I see Jalen as an NFL QB? I've a hard time doing so. But, I can't help but think of all the guys who were said to be the prototypical...until they weren't.

Exception rather than rule....anything can happen....hope I am wrong..i love the guy...."U go Jalan".. maybe just a great QB coach..or OC....like Kiffin...will fix his limitations as a pro QB....
But..... most everybody on this board...and 100M + at BD has watched him...plus NS.....
....hope I am wrong....hope he is the next Taylor...

Taylor got more than a few starts. He has a total of 43 starts (all of those in the last three seasons) and a 22-20 record with a pretty crappy team. Threw for over 3,000 yards in 2015 and 2016 and 2,800 last year before he got knocked out late in the season. He doesn't just throw for a bunch of yards either, he has never had more than 6 picks in a single season. Rushed for over 500 yards in all three of those years, too. I actually feel bad for him because hes going to the professional QB killing town.

Jesus man, do we have to turn EVERY thread into one of these debates?

.hope he is the next Taylor...
IF he's starting, I hope he's not the next Taylor. TT wasn't that good of a college QB.

Maybe he just didnt have the talent around him... if he got drafted and had 43 NFL starts as @Birdman37 says.....then he was a dang good QB...
and if T-mobile was his moniker.....as @Sgt. Lincoln Osiris says....
What the heck would we call JH.... pretty mobile first
takes more than a QB for a team to be successful...

About a month ago there was a series of threads around the Internet about Jalen's completion percentage against the better teams Bama has faced. He was less than 60% in three, maybe four games last season. Based on that 60% most were saying, "It's Tua." And, "Jalen can't make it in the league."

Taylor didn't complete over 60% of his passes at VT over his career not just a few games in a season. He was not a good college QB.

Those of you that are calling Taylor a "bad QB," how many games did you see him play in? Because I dont think the ACC likes to make a habit out of giving "bad QBs" Player of the Year awards...

And as far as completion percentage, that isn't a be-all, end-all stat but you def. need to take into account the talent around him. You're talking about a guy that in his three years starting in the NFL has thrown for AT LEAST 62%. So, either John Harbrough is a QB whisper and he just simply developed Taylor into a solid QB when he was with Baltimore or Taylor was pretty solid to begin with.
