When does it have to be determined who takes a redshirt? And, who do we have that we think will take a redshirt?

It doesn't have to be determined and verified by the NCAA or anything. It is solely up to the coach and he can decide at any time he wishes.

He could not allow a player to play a single game all year and then put him in for 5 minutes during the last game of the year and the player loses his redshirt.

If a coach doesn't play a freshman at all during his freshman season, he gets a redshirt. If a player is too small and needs to bulk up, redshirt him. If he needs extra time to learn the playbook, reshirt him.

In the case of a QB who is ready to play but there is a better and older QB ahead of him, redshirt him. It would be a waste of a whole year of football eligiblity to let him play a little bit at the end of a game. Then you shorted him and your team out of a full year of his participation.

They still practice and go to class and all that stuff but don't play in games.

Thanks, I was just wondering when the coach had to determine that a player will redshirt.

No problem. I hope I have told you correctly. I believe it doesn't even have to be his freshman year. Say a play participates in games his freshman year but is injured his sophomore year and doesn't play a single snap, I believe he could have a redshirt year then also.

That's correct as well.

When Prothro was hurt, as example, his first season out was a red-shirt year.

Technically, if the staff decides to, when we pull in a JUCO player if he hasn't taken his 'shirt year as of yet he can 'shirt his first year and still have two years to play two.
