With 8 states already represented in 2014 class, Alabama continues its national recruiting push

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- When he made his commitment official Friday, David Cornwell didn't just give Alabama its quarterback of the future.

He gave the Crimson Tide its first Oklahoman of the Nick Saban era.

Two days later, wide receiver Derek Kief announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide, bringing Alabama's class of 2014 up to 12. With Kief hailing from Cincinnati, his pledge further diversified the group, as Alabama currently holds commitments from players who represent eight different states.

The class goes all the way to the west coast (OG Viane Talamaivao; Corona, Calif.), extends through the Rocky Mountains (K JK Scott; Denver), dips into Texas (LB Zach Whitley; Houston), taps into the trusty football pipelines in Louisiana (DT O.J. Smith; Bossier City) and Georgia (three players) and even includes someone right in the Crimson Tide's backyard (RB Bo Scarbrough; Northport).

Only Tennessee, which already has 16 commitments, has more states represented in its 2014 class.

This isn't a new trend for Alabama; just one that isn't going away anytime soon. Alabama had 13 different states represented in its 2013 class, 10 in 2012 and 11 in 2011.

In 2008, 18 of Alabama's 32 commitments came from the home state.

All told, Alabama has received commitments/signed players from 24 different states since Saban took over in 2007.

"If you had to do this by getting in a car and running around like I used to do when I recruited, you could never figure out who the best players are in places such as Oklahoma, Nebraska, or California," Saban said during his 2013 National Signing Day press conference. "Now that there is so much information, it's not hard to identify. I think the players are a little bit more global in the way that they select their schools now, especially with the opportunity that they are looking for.

"We feel like our state is very important. We feel that it's very important to do a good job over the top, in terms of knowing who the best players are and which one of those players has some interest in Alabama."

On the other side of the coin is a school such as Texas A&M, which has 13 of its 14 commitments hailing from Texas. Six of Auburn's nine commitments are from Alabama. Eight of Mississippi State's 10 commitments are from Mississippi.

Winners of three of the past four BCS National Championships, Alabama is clearly in a unique position. The most players Alabama has recruited from one particular state since 2011 is the eight it nabbed from Georgia in 2012.

"They have leveraged their success into broadening the recruiting net and are casting it out wider," ESPN national recruiting analyst Tom Luginbill said during a February interview. "It's a selective process, not something they're going to do year in and year out.

"If they feel there's guys out there that are difference makers, and you're Alabama and you're at the pinnacle of college football right now, you're going to use that as best you can."

Even with Alabama's geographic footprint seemingly expanding by the day, Saban has repeatedly stressed that the Crimson Tide's "best opportunity to land good players" remains close to home. The commitments of Scarbrough, LB Shaun Dion Hamilton (Montgomery), CB Stephen Roberts (Opelika) and DB Kalvaraz Bessent (Kingsland, Ga.) and more serve as the current examples.

Saban's first three classes at Alabama featured 39 Alabamians. Counting the 2014 class of commitments, the next five have combined for 31.

"I think that with all the information that is available now, it's probably is a little easier to know who the best players are on a national scope," Saban said. "Our best opportunity to land good players is probably going to be within a five-hour radius.

"We are still going to be able to get guys from other places because they are attracted to our conference, the competition, the games we play in, the success we have had, the opportunity they have academically and for personal development which is something we pride ourselves in being able to do as a program."
