🏈 Recap of day one- Spring Camp, 2015 (notes and video)

Here is what coach Nick Saban had to say after practice:

  • Saban said there is no set depth chart at this point.
  • Denzel Devall (foot surgery) and Cyrus Jones (hip) will likely miss all of spring practice, Saban said.
  • Saban said offensive lineman Grant Hill is still on medical leave. "We're not prepared to make any decisions about what his future status is."
  • Tyren Jones remains suspended, Saban said.
  • Saban said Kenyan Drake is doing really well and that he ran a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash the other day.
  • Saban said several players are going to be in the mix for starting jobs along the offensive line.
  • Saban said Korren Kirven will be working with the offensive line during the spring. Johnny Dwight has moved to tight end. "Both of those guys have done pretty well with the changes," Saban said.
  • Saban said Jake Coker seems to be a lot more comfortable. "We're pleased with where he is right now."
  • In lieu of the Dak Prescott incident, Saban said he told the team to be sure to make the right choices and decisions while on spring break.
  • Saban on the quarterbacks: "Hopefully we'll have someone step up like Blake Sims did a year ago."
  • Saban listed the primary qualities he looks for in a quarterback: Leadership ability, making good choices and decisions, taking care of the ball, accuracy and making throws to generate big plays.

A few things not mentioned in the first post of this thread:

Brandon Greene is "working back in" with the offensive line right now. At 6'5", 300+ lbs. and with some eligibility left I wonder if they are looking at this last class, the lack of signing that final tackle, and thinking he can fit that role. Just as a note to consider...Greene finished last season wearing the #89. Yesterday, it appeared he was back to wearing #58. That leads me to believe this isn't one of those "spring experiments," but a move.

Reggie speaks:

Drake: While limited, Kenyan has participated in all of the 4th quarter, off-season S&C program. The staff believes they are seeing his confidence (that he can return to true form) grow daily.

Ronnie Clark is still taking some of the reps with the running back corps.

Personal opinion: I know I've harped on this over the last two seasons; heck, three really. One of the positions I'm most interested in is who fills the STAR. Since the '12 season we've had a safety fill that role. I'm thinking we see the defense move back to using a corner.

I'm not suggesting anything to be made of this...just a note for those that might be curious.
  • In QB drills, the rotation was:
    Coker,
    Morris,
    Bateman,
    Cornwell,
    Barnett.
  • In RB drills:
    Henry,
    Drake (drill work went well,)
    Flowers,
    Scarbrough.
  • OL, first group, from left to right:
    Cam,
    Taylor,
    Kelly,
    Bozeman,
    Jackson.
  • Hamilton was working with the ILB's yesterday and Lee was outside.
  • Jackson and Brown at corner (I don't expect Cyrus to lose his position.)
  • In nickel, Hand has been working at defensive end.

I realize I can be easily amused...and this pic did it:
