Random thoughts on several of Alabamaās defensive playersā¦
Keon Sabb: Weāre talking a lot about Hubbard, but Sabb has been really good too. Moving way better than he did a year ago while dealing w/the foot injury. Physical tone-setter whoās triggering downhill w/authority. People are sleeping on his play too much right now. Alabamaās safety duo has been as advertised the last two games.
Qua Russaw: Most defensive snaps (99) amongst front-line players, but only eighth-most pass rush snaps (19). Has more coverage snaps (20) than PR snaps. Let him hunt. Continues to be Alabamaās most complete edge.
Edric Hill: Has surprisingly been better against the run than as a pass rusher, but heās still gettin PR opportunities. Gotten progressively better each and every game. Valuable rotational piece.
Deontae Lawson: Moving better as the season progresses. Doesnāt look as sluggish as he did at times last year. Lost weight has seemingly helped. Mugging puts strain on his run fits, but heās disengaging blockers more consistently than he did last year. Encouraged by his progress, but must stay healthy.
Yhonzae Pierre: Like his usage as a flusher in obvious passing situations. Align him wide and let him try and flush QB to opposite side where a spying Lawson is waiting. Currently tied w/Overton for a team-leading 7 pressures despite almost 30% fewer PR snaps. Must finish better. Donāt think Lathamās return will affect his usage much.
James Smith: His game-wrecking ability has been evident. Can take over games, but must continue to work on his consistency. Heās getting there. Only one short of having most PR snaps (34) amongst Alabama defenders (Overton has 35). Plays w/violence and aggressiveness that you look for at the position.
Justin Jefferson: Been a lot better these past two games. Four missed tackles against Florida State, only one since. Size hurts him at times, but continues to be a tone-setting run-and-hit LB whoās got elite cover traits. Would like to see Lawson settle back into three-down role w/Jefferson and Hill-Green platooning, but would likely require Lawson to play both field (Mike) and boundary (Stinger).
London Simmons: Steady performer who continues to get settled in. Experience will help as he slides to NT2 role w/Keenan returning to the lineup. Played easily his best game in an Alabama uniform against Wisconsin. Like Faga, gets displaced some as a run defender, but NT2 w/Faga as situational NT3 should be more of an ideal
