🏈 Preston Gothard was IN BOUNDS! Anyone else remember 1983 vs. Penn St?

I was 11, and not yet a Bama fan. I'm not washed in the Crimson Blood, so to speak. I'm convert. So I don't remember it.

I don't mind telling you I'm nervous this week! I keep waiting for someone to say something to me. LOTS of PSU fans where I am...I hope my house/car stay intact and healthy this week!!!

wow! i watched this happen as a kid but had actually forgotten about this particular game, the big come back in the 2nd half & that catch at the end. this clip brought back a flood of memories. thanks for posting.

From a football stand point, that was the end of innocense for me. (Que "Old Yeller" theme music) That play was the first time I knew that making the play does not always mean that you win. Refs really did blow calls, and sometimes that has huge consequences.

It's amazing how everything in this world somehow leads back to college football in one way or another. If we had the replay rules back then, maybe you wouldn't be as cynical today. Who knows?

I never heard an explanation offered. "Because I said so" probably fits as well as any. Today we'd have all kinds of advantages with a jillion cameras so you could not only see what happened but you could even figure out what the official would have been able to see. I don't even remember what kind of position the offical who made the call was in.

If you look at the replay, the official was right on top of the guy - but he was behind him. If I give the ref the benefit of the doubt, then he must have 'assumed' that Preston didn't have possession. Yet, the replay showed clearly that he DID have possession. The least the guy could have done is defer to other officials who may have had a better vantage point of the play.

My first recollection about ALABAMA football is the 1979 Sugar Bowl and THE GOALLINE STAND. Ironic that it deals with this weeks' opponent.

My first memory of being at an actual game was the 1975 Sugar Bowl. I was 14. I was right beside the stage after the game where Jim Lampley was interviewing Bryant while he was receiving the Sugar Bowl trophy. In fact, at the 3:30 mark in this footage - I'm about 90% sure that I'm the kid right behind the Sugar Bowl commissioner raising my index finger in the air as he's handing him the trophy. I turn my head to the left as I'm raising my finger. I can't believe I found that footage on Youtube!
