2.5% vs Cali's 13.3% plus 1%.

On a mill, 25K versus 143K? Uh, duh? Now do 143 X 40 (rumored 40 million dollar deal over two years.) 143X40=5720 ... just add more zeros.

Look at how a lot of the Dodgers have structured their contracts. They take some and defer the rest. A move to another state changes the taxes on deferred. At least that's how I understand this and how LA has been working.
I thought California found a loop hole to still get the tax dollars on deferred payments when a person leaves the state (could be some kind of buyout process) I could be wrong on that, but I do know their tax laws are written very different than most states.

You may be right. I mentioned the Dodgers based on something I read a few years ago. If tax laws have changed in Cali since then? Ya, I'm not shocked.

@It Takes Eleven you know anything about this?

How long does one defer the income? Until they leave the next year? CA has a tax for leaving the state BTW. This is one way they 'GOTCHA' on deferred income.

No. I do know that California and New York both have a legion of revenue employees who investigate claims of moving out of state. They will get cell phone tower data, medical and veterinarian records, country club records - anything to refute that you spend your time in your claimed state (usually Texas or Florida) - to prove you still have closer ties to the legacy, high tax state as opposed to the claimed state.

I equate those looking to keep their hooks into the fleeing rich to those at The University we did battle with to get in-state tuition.

But there is still the question of for how long do you defer compensation? I'm sure at some point the CA tax will catch up to this issue.
That's why I posted the question to Tim. I interpreted his response ... sort of like a special investigation unit following where people live. As little as I follow the MLB a lot of this comes from little bits i've gleaned over the last few years.

If I were to live in California, (no desire) San Diego would be a nice place. IMO, California and most of the west coast should be its own country anyway.
Northern California would be my choice. The people there are mostly rural and seemed very similar to people in the south, without the accents and their food wasn't as good of course. I was surprised how different the areas were. I'd say it would make more sense to divide the state in half, let the southern half be it's own country of they want.

A story here? Did you have problems with one of the kids?

It was quite easy for me when I moved back to Tuscaloosa: different circumstance no doubt
Son number one went to Bama, and we were living in Georgia and had to pay out of state. After a spectacularly unsuccessful first year, I said you're coming home. He said no, I met a girl, I'll go to Shelton, work full time and pay my living expenses if you just pay my JUCO tuition/fees/books. He bumped up his hours with FedEx and put things together well enough to return to Bama after a year. So, he was a resident of Alabama for a year, paying taxes living there, not going to UA. Admissions guy jerked him around, told him, "If you graduated from a Georgia high school, you will never get in-state tuition." I took that quote and was able to have a call with his boss' boss, explained the situation, and he said, "give him a call and explain your situation". I called the guy, smarmy at the outset, a very punchable voice, and about three minutes into the call he got an email and he said, "did you talk to so and so about this?". I said yes, just a bit ago. We had an in-state designation in thirty minutes.

I hate people in a position to crush others, with no accountability. Not to mention, on my dime.
