🏈 play-calling

So all over the internet Bama fans are complaining about play-calling. And the most common fix suggested is RUN THE DAMN BALL. We aren't good enough up front to just cram it down teams' throats, especially good teams. We need the balance. The pass is setting up the run and Greg is playing better than most give him credit for. I don't know what the problem on offense is, but I don't think the play-calling has been terrible. For some reason we don't have any urgency in the first half.

Am I just delusional and the play-calling really is that bad? What would you do?

I don't think the play calling has been horrible. A better word would be vanilla, or worse, predictable. However you're playbook is only going to be as creative as your position on the field. It's impossible to "open 'er up" when you're starting on your own 15 yard line as opposed to say starting midfield. That being said we have been VERY predictable with what plays we'll run relative to our yards needed whether it's a first down or inside the redzone. There is nothing "flashy" about our offense by any means. Alabama has and will never be flashy. It starts with the LOS and that's a battle we've been losing all season. We simply cannot get off the ball quick enough or block to save GMAC from getting sometimes 2-3 guys unblocked. Why? I have no clue. It's irritating. But back to playcalling it starts up front. With a breakdown of protection it limits our choices. The thing about the playcalling that infuriates me to no end is the run it up the middle try for what seems over and over. And then when that doesn't work we'll sweep off to the side to beat and overly aggressive blitz and it works. Then we abandon the run by going back to trying to stuff it up the middle. I think most are just tired of the dink n' dunk offensive playcalling. We've seen it for long enough. Some creativity would be great but that can't happen until our issues with pass rush get resolved. There's always next year.

I don't think Jim McElwain is anything special and neither is Gmac, they are good enough if we had a great defense agan this year.
But the defense is young and giving up too many big plays, the offense has seemed to go into a shell as the season has gone on, not very innovative.

I don't think the playcalling has been horrible, but it's been average at best. I agree that we can't pound the ball like we have the past two years because of the OLine but, I also feel the offense has evolved and we are not commited to the run like we used to be. I miss the days of the 2 TE sets when we ran the counter and the power 0 and set up playaction passing to get the ball downfield and to the TEs.

I don't see the play calling as being the same as last year. We have abandoned the run, early and often. Add up the total touches by Ingram and average them out. Of course he was out the first two games. So average them out. If Bama can't or won't run the ball we lose.

Strange how the exact same play-calling with good/great execution last year was just wonderful, but the second the execution isn't as good somehow it's because of the play-calling....:panic:
I get what you are saying, but it's not the exact same. I don't remember us running empty very much, if any at all the last two year. The power and counter out of the ace set used to be our bread and butter, now we hardly ever go under center. I do agree that execution is the main problem, but I would like to see Ingram's touches increase, especially in the 2nd half.

In my opinion, our playcalling is to predictable. We have two of the best running backs in the nation and we don't use them like we should. Good/Bad offensive line shouldnt matter when you have two talented backs as we do.

When we run, its out of pistol or shotgun. Dumb in my opinion. Put two TE's in there and run out of I formation/Ace or something. Use what you have, which is a game manager at QB. We need to run and call playaction.

Guys, the difference between last year and this year ... Greg was able to go vertical just enough last year to force opposing defenses to respect our pass. For reasons unknown to me, Greg seems either unwilling or unable to even give deep routes a second's worth of consideration, opting always for the shortest routes. The result: opposing defenses are committing to stopping the run.

Can anyone explain our inability to go deep???

I thought Greg has done a better job the last two games of throwing the ball deep. Yesterday he just did overthrow Maze once that would have been a TD. He hit Maze deep once that he dropped and Peterson interfered. And it seems like he he threw one deep to Julio as well. IMO the problem lies with the inconsistancy of the OLine.

Pretty much. When throwing deep the offensive line has to be able to allow the quarterback some extra time for the receivers to get downfield. If the line is inconsistent, itll screw with the QBs timing. our guys have to be able to hold up atleast 2-3 seconds most of the time, and it was no coincidence that when we did we moved the ball. Also, runblocking is inconsistent as well, it is depressing tbh

Offense is too predictable. Ingram and Richardsons yards per carry is actually pretty good. They are not getting enough touches. We should use both backs on the field at the same time. Why don't we? Trying to keep them fresh? Sorry I don't buy that reason. Where is the play action pass? Also, we have run the ball best this season out of the pistol. Do it more often. When in the wildcat hand it to the man in motion more than twice a year. Richardson should be the one in motion in the wildcat.
