Former record-setting quarterback Phillip Sims was hired as head football coach Friday by J.R. Tucker High.

The Oscar Smith alum is staying in the Richmond area and moving from John Marshall, where he helped the Justices rebuild. They went from 1-9 to 4-7 to 6-5 last season, making the playoffs the past two years.

Because of school construction, Tucker won’t play a true home game the next two seasons. The Tigers have won just one game total in the last two years, and their only playoff appearance ever was in 1992, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Sims starred for Oscar Smith High before playing for Alabama, Virginia and Winston-Salem State. He went to training camp with the Arizona Cardinals.

I remember that forum QB debate! And I believe there was an epic A Day battle that really stoked the fire between those 2...
Whew...a bit before that.

A long debate going back to the fall preceding that A-day.

I saw Step L posting recently ... what was the 'net gig he and his brother had at the time? Anyone recall?
