Memories of the last Iron Bowl are mixed for Paul Finebaum.
Of course it was the most memorable ending in rivalry ā perhaps college football ā history, but the broadcasting side was rough. The Monday after the game, ESPN opted to simulcast the first 90 minutes of his radio show live on ESPNU. Then the phones crashed and Finebaum spent more than an hour vamping.
"At least in broadcasting, it was the worst experience I've ever had," Finebaum toldAL.com on Tuesday.
In terms of the 2014 rematch, a "repeat of last year would be pretty cool," Finebaum said, but there's a different plan in place for the broadcasting side. Instead of waiting for Monday, they're gauging reaction in real time. The SEC Network will air "Finebaum Film Room: Iron Bowl Live" simultaneously as the game airs on ESPN at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
Finebaum will watch the game in studio with four other analysts and react to the action. Among the crew will be former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy and ex-Auburn offensive lineman Cole Cubelic.
And, of course, there will be callers.
The exact ratio of callers to analysis is still being determined. Finebaum said they'll feel it out as they go to find the right mix.
