šŸ“” Paul Chryst is out as Wisconsin coach.

So far we have:
Herm Edwards Arizona St.
Scott Frost Nebraska
Paul Chyrst Wisonsin
Geoff Collins Georgia Tech
Karl Dorrell Colorado

Any others?
Chryst, What did he do to get fired? His record at Wisconsin was 65-23, B1G was 43-18 as of 2021. His Bowl record was 6-1 the one he lost was by a single point.

He has been subpar since 2020, and just got housed at home by 24 to Beilema and Illinois - in Year 2 of his rebuild at U of I, a program with little history.

Wisconsin is trending down, and it's not really controversial to say that.

I know they aren't happy with 2-3 but there is a little solace to be found in those opponents who are a combined 13-2 on the season.

They were 9-4 last season which mirrors what they've been over the last decade; a nine/ten win team on average. From my outside perspective it seems his dismissal is premature.

We agree...yea!!!!!!!!!

There are programs like bama, osu...etc. that consistent 9-10 win seasons....and notwinning conference...arent ok...

But.....Wisconsin?.....didn’t nebraska fire their HC...with consistent 9-10 win seasons...and now...where are they...

Their downward trend is pretty apparent. They didn't improve throughout the year last year, and with the West on the line at the end of the year, they were thoroughly outplayed and beaten at their own game by rival Minnesota. Their 2022 recruiting class was not good, and 2023 is looking worse.

This year, they lost to Washington St at home where the offense again shat the bed. Wazzu is one of the least talented teams in the Pac 12 and is young in a rebuild with Jake Dickert, who is a first time HC.

And you won't find any Wisconsin fan finding solace in getting boat-raced and beat up by former coach Bret Bielema in year 2 of a rebuild at Illinois. There's not a legit excuse for that performance - 2 yards rushing for Wisconsin.

Wisconsin reached the tipping point under Chryst - he wasn't going to bring them back, so the alternative was to continue to watch the team get worse and lose more games so the firing could be more palatable for those on the outside, or people who just want to look at Chryst's overall record.

It all falls with Graham Mertz. They thought they hit gold with a highly publicized and highly recruited quarterback. He has been a disaster, and when all your eggs are in that basket you're stuck. Mertz wasted zero time trademarking his name and focusing on NIL though.

Outside of thst, Wisconsin is still a stable Top 10-15 program.

I think they have some OL issues as well which have surfaced the last couple years. Their WRs aren't bad this year but last year they had nobody on the outside who could routinely get open.

On D, I think Leonhard is a top DC, but they've sprung some leaks up front this year, and their safety play is lacking - not enough speed. That goes back to some subpar recruiting as well.

Mertz has not been good enough, but against Illinois, they ran for 2 yards. With an elite RB. That's not all on Mertz.

Braelon Allen ran for over 1,200 yards last year and almost 500 so far this year, averaging over 6 YPC both seasons. I can't answer to the 2 yards on 8 carries, but I can also say that Derrick Henry isn't rushing for over 100 yards every game, but still manages 1,500+ yards in a season and a rushing title.

You're not talking about one game though, you're speaking to the past few have gone down hill, but it's more on Mertz than anyone else. I don't see them have a 1,200 yard back as an offensive line problem. I think 60% completion rate and 10/11 TD/Int ratio is the issue. With a stud back, it should EASILY help your passing game open up regardless of talent.

They lost this year vs. Wazzu because they couldn't run the ball effectively, and though Mertz played well and probably had his best game in a year, they fumbled it away. So a theme has been racking up yards vs lesser teams, but not being able to run the ball on their terms vs the good teams, and not being able to protect the passer. It's not a big secret to Wisconsin fans that their OL play has been subpar.

Mertz was pretty bad last year - threw tons of INTs early, but they couldn't protect vs. Penn St and ND. Braelon Allen didn't become the starter til after several games (due to injury to Mellusi).

But the final straw was getting stomped and out-physicalled by Illinois this past weekend. 2 yards rushing is inexcusable. That wasn't on Mertz (not that he's been very good) - it was a systemic meltdown. Wisconsin's problems aren't going away. They haven't recruited another QB who is any good either.

They need to hit on a transfer QB, need a total revamp of their offense, and hope Leonhard can lead as a HC and either hire a great DC or do that PLUS be a head coach next year and beyond. They're going to be lacking in talent for a couple years minimum due to a poor recruiting operation.
