In a throwback high school basketball game that should have taken place in a cracker-box gym with players wearing off-white Chuck Taylor hightops, Parker beat Carver-Birmingham 6-4 Wednesday night.

Parker’s Keith Body scored the game-winner with 1:10 left after the Thundering Herd led 4-2 heading into the fourth quarter.

“We came out in a zone (defense) and they held it out,” said Parker coach Reginald McGary. “Sometimes you do that to make sure the other team comes out of the zone, but we came out of the zone and they still held it.”

Parker missed some early shots in the lane — “they were contested shots, but we should have made them,” McGary said — and with a lead, the veteran Parker coach figured he would play the slowdown game, too.

Carver’s Levente Woodside tied the game 4-all in the final quarter then Parker held the ball outside the Carver zone several minutes before Body scored the winning points.

Parker takes on Class 5A top-ranked Ramsay in the Area 10 final on Saturday. Both teams will advance to subregional play.
