šŸ“” Pac-12 passes rule that 5-7 teams can't go to bowl games, even with APR score

this needs to be an all over rule. why would you want to reward a team, any team, with a losing record? i never understood it; apr be damned. good grades don't mean good athletes, and vice versa.

5 teams in last 3 years played in bowl games with a 5-7 record due to APR scores..none of them Pac12 teams. What are they solving?

Their commissioner it seems is lacking real vision. He's focused on the wrong things in my opinion.

The 5-7 teams were considered because their conference had bowl commitments they couldn't fill. So, they got the best losing teams that had good academics. Just leave them out.

I agree with this and am not trying to be snarky but am curious - what things do you think he should focus on?

This may give some insight:

"This is a concern of the Pac-12 presidents, and I can tell you it's a large discussion point with meetings with the commissioner at every single meeting," Schulz said. "… The Pac-12 schools have got to be competitive with the ACC, the SEC and the Big Ten and Big 12, and we're falling behind."

  • How far behind? Pac-12 schools took in an estimated $2.5 million each from the much-maligned Pac-12 Networks. LSU has a defensive coordinator (Dave Aranda) who makes that much by himself.
  • Pac-12 schools average $30.9 million in annual revenue. The SEC is No. 1 at $41 million. That $10 million difference could be the difference in paying a top-notch coach. (Note: UCLA's Chip Kelly and Stanford's David Shaw are among the top 10 among highest-paid coaches.) "Is [that gap] going to become $20 million in the not-too-distant future?" Anderson asked.
  • Is it time to start calling it the Power Four? Now four years into the College Football Playoff era and 20 years since the Bowl Championship Series started, the Pac-12 has the Power Five's fewest total appearances (five).
If this was a country club, the Pac-12 would be in danger of losing its membership."

Cracks are forming in the Pac-12: Will they be patched before it's too late?

Russo has a point here. And, it pretty well matches what many forecasted about what the playoffs would do to the other bowl games.

I caught this last night. The deleted tweet referenced: "enough with all the participation trophies." (sic)

  1. Pac12 is reportedly 4th in conf payouts (~25% behind #1), they have finally released numbers (1st time mind you) of $371 payout to 12 schools. ~$30 million per team (laughable).
  2. Friday night games, what value are they getting? Failed experiment?
  3. What are they doing with the $130+ million not being paid out? Why are their expenses so high (I know the answer)?
  4. Why do they pay their Pac12 brass so much? Are they getting the return for that?
  5. Look at the overall conference teams financials. Scott via his vision is putting many teams in a terrible spot financially over the long haul.

Not to mention, they've reported ~48k attendance the last two years to their conf championship game. SEC is ~75k the last two years. What's this doing to get more people in the stadium?

In 2011, UCLA won their division with a 6-6 record, the inaugural Pac12 championship game. They lost the conf championship game, went to a bowl game with a 6-7 record (sub .500 as the division leader), and lost their bowl game ending with a 6-8 record.

Stepping back and looking at the entire picture when it comes to the PAC Network I've got two thoughts.

One, the PAC is a victim, so to speak, of FOX trying to keep up with the "Mothership." After seeing the deal with the Longhorn network and the successful launch of the SEC Network they jumped on FOX's bandwagon too quickly. The idea that each school should have its own channel seems logical (based on LH network) but foolish when you consider comparing a school like Oregon State, Arizona, et. al, to the size of the Texas fan base.

And two, you have to give a hat tip to the ACC. They sat back and watched what has worked and what hasn't and they are patterning their network off of the model the SEC Network employed.

Its so simple...(yeah right).....get this thing down to 4 conferences.. the pac 12 or howmany numbers.....need an infusion of excitement...and what they have and big 12 is not getting it...
More realignment...... never happen.... this whole thing is like congress putting it together...

Read that they went a combined 1-11 in bowls and the NCAA tourney. It's one thing when your product is on so late that few have the stamina or curiosity to hang in there, it's another when other conferences are putting the whammy on your head.

I have the Pac 12 network thanks to sling TV, yeah, thanks a lot. They don't get it. During this season's new signing day, they weren't impressed. They decided to completely miss the event. This is the kind of stuff that makes even Finebaum look good.

Thanks for the response! I feel like the Pac12 is just throwing money into the fire. The students at these schools are not benefiting from pretty much anything the administration has done as of late.

But redemption is near..AU vs Washington.....come on Huskies
Wonder though..will Washington claim they are National Champions if they beat AU...undefeated and beat The team that beat UGA an Bama...ummm
I know..different year but ....anybody can claim anything in this modern era...

I have been saying this for years in discussions about poor attendance at lower bowl games. They don't care if anyone is there or not. Just have two teams on the field when the TV camera comes on.
