It's an interesting scenario he's proposing though the likelihood has to be the first question you must ask.

Based purely on polls when was the last time there wasn't a SEC team that finished in the top four? @252BAMA this is down your wheel house as well. To the best of my recollection we'd have to go back to the 90's; Florida was the highest ranked team and they were outside the top four.

At the end of the regular season (including CCGs) in 2005, Auburn was the highest ranked SEC team in the AP poll at #7. Has been at least one SEC team in the Top 4 every year since then.

If there's no PAC team in the playoffs I believe we'd see a drop in viewership for the playoffs across the board from that area of the country.
IF there's no SEC team in the playoff, is the same drop seen? No ACC, same drop?

On one hand you'd think the loss of a SEC team would have the biggest impact on audience. But then again, the southeast has the biggest percentage of college football fans. I could see an argument the loss of viewers would be somewhat balanced.

NP. As a side note, 2005 is the perfect case study as to how the CG can cost a conference a spot in the playoff. LSU (10-1) was ranked #3 at the end of the regular season but lost 34-14 to #13 UGA (9-2) in the CG. Which dropped LSU to #10 and moved UGA up to #8. LSU wound up as the highest ranked SEC team at #6 in the Final Poll after beating Miami 40-3 in the Peach Bowl.
