šŸˆ OU's Bob Stoops after SEC again

The Oklahoma coach took another shot at the SEC on Wednesday night, questioning the league's reputation for quality defenses just months after calling its mystique "propaganda."

"Just a few years ago, we had all the quarterbacks," Stoops said in a small session with beat reporters, according to The Oklahoman. "And now, all of a sudden, we can play a little better defense and some other people can't play defense.

"Funny how people can't play defense when they have pro-style quarterbacks over there, which we've had. They're all playing in the NFL right now."

SEC teams have had difficulty slowing down the stellar quarterbacks in their league this season, including Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel, Georgia's Aaron Murray and LSU's Zach Mettenberger.

Meanwhile, former Big 12 stars such as Baylor's Robert Griffin III, Oklahoma State's Brandon Weeden and Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill currently are playing in the NFL after terrorizing the conference's defenses with their arms in years past.

Stoops has consistently pointed to Texas A&M, which left the Big 12 for the SEC prior to the 2012 season, then put up stellar offensive numbers in the SEC, as an example of the type of offense his Sooners had to face regularly in Big 12 play.

With Tannehill under center, the Aggies averaged 39.1 points and 490.2 yards per game as a member of the Big 12 in 2011. With Manziel taking snaps, Texas A&M averaged 44.5 points and 558.5 yards per game as a member of the SEC in 2012.

"I still don't know how (Texas) A&M was third in the country in total offense and scoring offense playing all those SEC defenses. I have no idea how that happened," Stoops said. "Oh, they got a quarterback. That's right."

He's got a point...

There are a few things that jump out to me Matt.

One: We didn't expect UGA to field a defense this season. Two: The same applies to LSU—to a degree. Three: Manziel is a freak of an example...in fact, so inordinary I don't see how we can use him as a "mean."

Here's one thing I can draw an issue with:
"Funny how people can't play defense when they have pro-style quarterbacks over there, which we've had. They're all playing in the NFL right now."

Quantity? Sure, if you consider four to be a large number (The B1G has better QB's in the league right now.) Quality? Meh. Anyone care to comment on Bradford and how he's doing? The only QB from the Big12 that one can point to might be Griffin.

Random thoughts...

How many points do you think Ole Miss would put up on OU? How many points do you think Ole Miss would put up on any team out of the Big12? And an SEC team shut them out?

Can anyone name one team in the Big12 that would beat UGA? LSU? The only one I can think of MIGHT be Baylor...but I suspect they'd fall on their collective asses when facing a legit defense.

And just for emphasis...

And, someone remind me what exactly Oklahoma Football has accomplished in the last several years under Coach Stoops.
What is his point anyway? Just a dig at SEC defenses in week 5? really?
He's just pimpin his conference.

Maybe one year his Sooners can have BOTH and offense and a defense, which is what SEC teams at the upper level are having to accomplish to stay on top.
I like OU's program, but their trajectory seems to be more of a plateau than an upward one.
They remind me of UGA over Richt's tenure overall, but at least UGA has moved upwardly and now they're legit contenders.
Just sayin.

Yup, I'm not saying that anyone thought either UGA or LSU would have the same D's they had last year, but I think Bob makes a point. I think he's tired of hearing about the SEC, first its O's, now it's D's. Sure he should just not give it air time, but he does. I can't name that many successful Big XII NFL QB's from the last 10-15 years, sure they've played for a few years. NC State has the QB's in the NFL.

And...you need to bet some damn money on the games before I leave you in the dust this weekend. :icon_bounce:

Love it, guess you are saying, game on.

.

By my count one more would tie them with the Big12 conference.

That same A&M team that that scored on "those defenses" didn't beat anyone (outside of Arkansas) like they did oklahoma - even if they are used to seeing that kind of offense. Also, OLE MISS scored 44 on TEXAS (of the Big 12) and scored 0 on Bama's SEC defense!!!! Stoops, what did you say!??? Speak up! :smiley-no-no-yellow

I personally think Stoops is right; I think the SEC as a whole is down big time this year from years past, and will probably be down more so next year. More SEC teams have gone to the "offense first" mentality. I think the biggest cause (which I seen coming when the rule was made) is the 25 signees a year (back counters or not; no more than 25 a year) limit the SEC in acted upon itself while the other conferences is still able to do as they please within NCAA limitations.
