🧑‍🤝‍🧑 / 🏡 ⛈ Our 2026 Weather / home projects thread.

At some point, don't you just have to break down and go the ten minutes to Home Depot and get it?
That list grows smaller by the day. But sure. On some things it can't be avoided. Lumber would be at the top of the list; plants as 1A.

I spend time goofing off at Home Depot when I don't have anything I need. If you were to call today and mention you were headed there and wanted to know if I wanted to "tag along" I'd likely be there. Just to wander/wonder around. Where someone leafed through a catalong 25 years ago I'll wander through a hardware store today. It's a time of respite. With Lowe's across the street? I could easily spend over an hour between the two garden departments.

@TerryP HD does a great job of trying to get and then retain their customers. One thing I wouldn’t suggest is this, don’t order online and have it delivered to the store. The idiots at the RDC treat goods they load on trucks we get like workers at a landfill! Have it delivered to your home, even if it does cost. We had one customer order 3-4 toilets for a new home. Had to reorder two of them TWICE!!! Ever heard a toilet that sounded like one of those rain sticks? 4 foot fluorescent bulbs, they are brutal on stuff!!
We do occasionally run across a shady 3rd party group that delivers and then wants to charge a little extra to install appliances.

Ya see? Here's where I'm likely one of those "pain in the ass" customers. The last time I bought a toilet I did in person. @It Takes Eleven I wanted to see the inside of the tank and the components. Just the seat choice alone is something I wanted to see in person.

To your point? I can't think of a purchase at a hardware store I've had to have delivered to the store with picking it up in mind. In fact, it's a little funny you mention this. The only thing I can remember ordering online and having to pick it up at a store was a wallet (been shopping for one since Brandon started that thread.)

I've bought a ton of HD.com and some Lowes.com store delivered. Our hot water heaters aren't carried in the HD stores, so they have to be shipped there. Same for several of our vanities. At least one set of patio furniture was a seasonal HD online closeout. I bought a six foot wreath from Lowes online, delivered to the store. It came in a big box, in four pieces, had to be bolted together.

I've just been lucky, I guess. Major items like some you've mentioned have always been in stock. Although, I've never purchased an appliance from either. I may experience this soon; need a new dishwasher. Here's the thing. Wholesale Appliance Center opened two or three years after I built here; 32-33 years now. Three stores. It's a local chain. With my stove, fridge, W&D...it's just easy. It's just an appliance store.

Famous last words
We all know I was being facetious when I posted that yesterday. Though, I really wasn't because I don't trust the forecasts here. In the beginning of this thread I talked about what they were forecasting and what it felt like when we were in the middle of the winter storms a few weeks ago. As easy as this is for me to say, "I was right again."

I didn't notice the wind until almost 7 last night and that was only because I saw a plastic bag I left outside floating across the back yard.

@It Takes Eleven as it would ... HD delivered after dark. But, no big deal. It's colder today and things I needed to get done today? I did yesterday.

Hey, it's not easy being me.

@It Takes Eleven As I'm heading down I-26 towards MUSC I noticed six billboards, back to back to back A row, ya know? All advertising Plugs Appliances. Didn't know they were here...and I've never seen billboards like that before. Great idea. Hard to forget seeing it six times in a quarter of a mile

The lady who designed our home did us no favors. She didn't adequately consider mechanical aspects in the home (room for HVAC, exhaust stacks). She also made a couple of grievous errors in the home design, such as providing an older version of the basement with our plans, such that the footing and basement walls didn't match the first floor, and there was inadequate headspace to get to our bonus room. I was extremely fortunate that the foundation/poured wall guys caught the first error and the framers the second, and that I had thoughtful subs in these key areas and not someone just putting in a shift.

On that note, where the hot water heaters are in each end of my basement, it would've involved some shenanigans to get standard natural gas exhaust stacks through the roof. I found a type of high efficiency natural gas heater that recirculates the exhaust to continue heating water until the exhaust is only warm, not hot, and the vent temp allows for schedule 40 PVC to head out horizontally (it's pulled/pushed by a squirrel cage fan). When it's running, you can hold the pipe with your hand. It's warm, but not uncomfortable. HD.com carried it at a decent price, so I went with them.

I think the repetitive billboards have been a staple of tourist type/destination shopping spots for many years, like the Sand Dollar shoe store in Gulf Shores, Sikes & Kohn in Pine Level, Tanger Outlets, etc. Bucees, of course, is a serial board advertiser, but a nod to Burma Shave:

Oh, I've seen them from Rock City to South of the Border (a lot of those used to be around here.) I've never seen them in such close proximity. (I'd never heard of Plugs before today that I can recall.)

I finally got to the wax myrtle yesterday, late afternoon. I've pruned it over the last years to the point it looks like a 12' mushroom. Last night I was just shaping/pruning the bottom "ring" and ran across a pigeon's nest. (Idiot of a neighbor brought them in the neighborhood a few years ago by throwing bird seed all over her yard. I hate these things. No issues with them at all, until that one fateful spring.)

The male flew out, then the female, and I noticed the nest. "No regerts." (IYKYK) I knocked nest down, threw it out with the trash...but also displaced the hatchling. Now, it could fly a few feet. Not vertically, mind you. I left it alone thinking "the owls will get it tonight."

No such luck. The male and female are still watching over that damn thing as it hops around the back yard. Should I feel bad? If you say yes? Go play in the street.

On a 3x5 landscaping tie. Two adults right beside it...I have to assume, mom and dad. They flew away as soon as I stepped outside. (Illegal immigrants, I'm telling ya!!) I didn't know that about these varmints.
