⚾ 🥎 Oregon State pitcher Luke Heimlich story being told

Just curious what folks think about this. Should they have published this?
I have my doubts this really happened:

"Our decision to publish was not made lightly and was the subject of intense discussion in our newsroom."

I can see a discussion about which page to put the article on; front of the news or front of the sports. I can see a discussion along the lines of 'above the fold or underneath the fold.' I can't see a discussion, much less an intense discussion, on whether or not to publish. My god, this is a publication from Advance Media/Advance Digital! History proves their content management personnel take publishing "yellow journalism" as part of their job responsibility.

I only caught bits and pieces of this on my drive in this morning to work. If this young man was a juvenile when this happened, it should not be published based on the very limited amount I heard. It sounded to me that he and his parents did not know he was suppose to register. I always hate to hear such horrible news but especially this type of news. No one wins. My thoughts and prayers are for all involved but especially the family of the victim.

If he is a registered sex offender he already is "published." They suffer through the constant degradation of getting their picture and stats in the local paper and on flyers in the neighborhood they reside. They have to live a certain distance from schools and daycares and other such stuff wherever they call home. Nothing normal about the life of a pedophile. Question is, did Oregon State do their due diligence on this one?

It looks like the state where the crime occurred does not shield juvenile offenders for this type of crime, so it's in the public domain. I believe he and his family knew he had to register when changing addresses because he knew to register initially. I agree it's a Catch 22 whether to publish or conceal on the part of the paper. It's a no-win for the offender and the victim. I hope both find the peace to put it behind them.

RTR,

Tim
