šŸˆ GAME THREAD Orange Bowl: Bama - 45 vs OU - 34

I wanted to complain about our special teams again and I think I will. They don't look prepared mentally and to say after 13 games we still look like the keystone cops on kickoff and punt returns is the understatement of the year. If the gunners don't kill Waddle our own guy's will. At a crucial time in the game, they have to kickoff on their own 10-yard line folks because of 2 consecutive personal fouls on their TD and Brian Robinson decides this would be a great time to call a fair catch on our own 20. We in turn punt the ball and the sooners suddenly have the ball at the 50. Nobody takes their foot off the pedal after a big lead like the Tide.

I maintain he was pointing at the ball for the returner. Nowhere did I see him waive his arm like a legit fair catch. I only saw the replay once, but seriously looked like he pointed at the sky, not waive at it.

Did you guys ever hear an explanation, or can you explain to me, why we got the ball at the spot of the fair catch when we caught it inside the 25? thanks.

It's by rule, Tim. If a player signals for a fair catch and doesn't catch the ball, but another players does, it's ruled "mark at the spot" the fair catch is called.

I wondered the exact same. TerryP explains it as I see you have read. Interesting stuff. Makes me want to watch as many hands as I can on punt returns and kickoffs now. Not even sure I knew a guy could call fair catch if he wasn't the one catching it. Kind of like kick interference for a guy that screams and yells in your face compared to touching you.
