Lane Kiffin told his Tennessee players tonight that he is leaving to become the new head coach at Southern California. (Mark Almond / The Birmingham News)Just when you thought things couldn't get any more bizarre in the world of Southeastern Conference football, Lane Kiffin has announced that he is leaving Tennessee to replace Pete Carroll as the head coach at Southern California.

Three weeks before national signing day.

And you though Florida coach Urban Meyer's resignation and possible about-face was stunning?

Even before tonight's shocking news could soak in, coaches from rival schools were calling high school seniors who have committed to Tennessee.

One of those coaches apparently was Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart.

One of the players reportedly was Markeith Ambles, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound wide receiver from Henry County High School in McDonough, Ga.
"Yeah, I really don't know what to think right now," Ambles told TiderInsider.com.

"I've spoken to a lot of coaches. I don't want to say too much about other schools right now, but I did just talk to Coach Smart from Alabama a few minutes ago. Ole Miss has been recruiting me hard, too."

We can only imagine how often the hot prospects' phones are ringing.
