After what was an enjoyable off week considering where this Alabama team is today and where we all thought we were going to be just two months ago, I started looking at the upcoming battle this Saturday with Ole Miss early Sunday morning. Time and time again one constant kept catching my eye. It was how often the number 3 kept entering the picture. It is fitting considering we are facing our 3rd SEC Western Division opponent for the 2008 season.

As I looked back over the last 3 years a lot of things popped out to me immediately, namely the number of times the number 3 entered the picture.

Nice read!

But!

We’ve talked about the 3 year cycle Alabama has been on having solid seasons in 2005, 2003, 1999…

2005 10-2
2003 4-9
1999 10-3

Should be 2002, in '02 the Fran lead team was 10-3. :D Just saying.

Maybe this number three will have a big game Saturday???

I actually edited that on the blog earlier today when I noticed the mistake and forgot to do it here. It's supposed to say SEC Western Division opponent.

Thanks Mike!

Well done Terry. And to add to your theme... the past 3 seasons, we've beaten Ole Miss by 3 each time.

Read the 3rd paragraph!

To weird you mentioned that!

LOL. I knew when I typed it that I must have missed it somewhere. I was reading the article while I was on hold on the phone, and I guess I skipped over it. I was actually reading along looking for it.

One thing I disagree with is the DL. There is only one DL on the Miss squad that I would trade one of ours for...I also think that our wideouts are much more talented. They have had some issues, but they have a higher potential - we have more "Sunday Potential." I would not trade them either. Special teams I don't know what to make of. We are improving, but still...

Wideouts.

I see the advantage to Ole Miss in terms of numbers.

We are getting good results out of Julio and the Rebs are getting good results out of McCluster. So, you can call that a wash.

The thing is Ole Miss has two more guys that are playing in their rotation that are equal threats in Hodge and Wallace. We counter with Mike McCoy, and we don't know if he's going to be 100% when Saturday comes around.

It's a 3 man to 2 man advantage. Their WR's are good enough where teams can't just stack the box against the run and hope those guys can't handle man coverage all day, because they can and will beat our guys in man coverage a few times Saturday. I just don't see a way around that happening.

DL...

We are starting to get some pressure on the QB at times this year but a lot of that is coming from Anders and Upshaw, not our front 3. When I looked at both DL's, what I see in Ole Miss' favor is across the board they are pretty even in terms of talent and the ability to get back into the pocket.

It's something we haven't been able to do this season consistently. If Hardy does play, he's good for some game changing moments but he isn't going to be "that guy" for 4 quarters. At least he hasn't shown that he can do that so far in his career.

Deaderick and Greenwood both have been solid as has Cody. The advantage I see here is Hardy is taking up double teams from the end which has allowed their tackles to get pressure frequently. And, that isn't even mentioning Tillman who does a good job from the opposite side of the line as well.

Both lines are good against the run. Ours coming from the scheme of our LB'ers taking the lanes. Their's coming from their lineman taking the lanes.

It's a slight advantage on both units...but, it comes down to #'s in both cases with Ole Miss having a man or two advantage in both cases.

Cecil Hurt, in his column yesterday, pointed another situation with the number "3" I didn't know about until reading it this morning.

The Ole Miss coach brings his team to Tuscaloosa on Saturday with high hopes of derailing the Crimson Tide's undefeated season. Nutt has already done that three times in his career, handing Alabama its first loss in 1998, 2004 and 2006.
