🏀 ***Official 'Bama-Dayton In-game thread***

Shannon Hale reminds me of Rod Grizzard. Always had bad body language and looked like he didn't give a rip. I hated watching him play and get to play a lot.
Team looks really undisciplined with a low basketball IQ. I know Grant's recruiting has a lot to do with it but they should have played more disciplined than this. They are more focused on playing fast than playing smart. Coach Avery has to be very careful how he handles this with the players. It doesn't take much for an over-emotional coach to lose a team's trust.

Coach Avery sounds like he was just hit by a bus and doesn't know where to go with this performance or team. If they don't play a whole lot better Friday at home, it's going to be really bad. I wouldn't worry so much if the coach had proven himself on this level. He is used to having NBA talent and let's face it, the coaches in the NBA don't have to do a lot of scheming and planning. It's more of dealing with egos and public relations. It's still yet to be proven if this guy can really coach up players. Alabama needed a coach, recruiter and a program cheerleader. We have the recruiter and cheerleader. I hope we have the coach too.

I hope so, too. I remember a certain football coach looking a bit discombobulated after losing to a LA directional school.

We all have to remember that talent wise, we are severely lacking, especially with depth. Bama has been picked to finish 13 out of 14 SEC teams. This is going to be a long year, anyone who knows anything about basketball should realize that. The thing that I want to see over the course of the season is how much improvement we make. CAJ has recruits coming but they are a year from contributing so we will have to endure a long year in the loss column.

Good news is that we had a good bit of open looks on ball screens and pick and rolls, just couldn't get them to bank it.

Still, this was an embarrassment and certainly didn't expect the team to be this depleted in talent.

Kudos to Archie Miller and Dayton. That was a sound defensive performance. Bama could not get in rhythm and was shut off from scoring in the paint.

True.

Being in my old geezer phase, I remember when C M Newton came to Alabama, replacing Hayden Riley, His first season was even worse than Riley's last one, but by his second year things were better, and when he left we had been to the NCAA a number of times and had sent several players to the NBA. Someone asked him about that terrible first year, and he said that he probably could have won a few more games that first season, had he played a lot of zone and slowed it down on offense, but he had bigger things in mind, and he taught even that first team the style of play that propelled Alabama onto the national stage in the seventies.

CAJ could have chosen to continue what we did last year, and likely the pounding we got yesterday would have been more acceptable, but he has chosen to do it his way. Talent wise, there are some obvious issues. The two most obvious ones are 1) we have no one who is a threat to score in the low post. Until Taylor, Hall or Kessens shows that he can post up, get the ball and score over a single defender, no onne will feel compelled to double team the post. We are not getting the low post offense and the corresponding clean looks at the basket when the other teams double the post. 2) While there are some on the way, right now we don't have any dependable scorers from the wing, other than Obasahon. Perhaps Austin will develop here. He certainly was a good shooter in high school. And perhaps Hale's shot will come around.

Dayton is a very good team, sweet sixteen a year ago, and they are well coached and talented. This is the first measuring stick game, and right now we have a long way to go. The answer is to keep on working to improve.

I havent been to a b'ball game in years, so maybe someone who has can answer this question. Is C.C. as bad as it was portrayed to be today on a local sports show? It was pretty much stated that it needs torn down and rebuilt.

On a different note, much like Joe said earlier, talent wise, we are lacking. As long as the effort is there this year, Ill be happy.

I thought Dayton was Great 8 year before last and 32 last season. Either way, wow, quality team. I set my DVR (then had to go to a funeral), came home late to watch, and the game didn't tape. Sounds like the Tide's night was about like mine. I haven't seen them play this season.

I did see LSU play Kennesaw State. After Bama's performance earlier against them, I did begin to worry. Turns out it was founded. We'll see how it goes. I'll say it again. I still like this hire. It would take poor performance for a couple of seasons to make me think otherwise. Basketball's funny. We may see something lots different by the end of the season.

Without seeing the local sports show, I'll just say this. It is far from the worst arena in the SEC. The school spent several million four or five years back on renovations, including the state of the art overhead scoreboard, and a food court area, improved lighting inside the arena. There are those who call it a dump, but I am not in their number.

Coleman Coliseum isn't a bad venue, but it is a bit outdated. The lighting and seating configuration could be better, but it's not bad and a very electric atmosphere when sold out.

I would like to have a new arena though. I understand we just had a $30+ million baseball stadium being built, but it would be refreshing and show recruits that we're committed to improving as a basketball program. I like Coleman, but with Ole Miss getting a new arena, Coleman Coliseum is beginning to get near the bottom in basketball facilities. I think the fans are too far from the court to begin with and, even with the sudden change in positioning the student section, it still doesn't feel like we're that involved. It's frustrating to hear though that this is a pipe-dream though and probably not even a consideration for Bill Battle.

My biggest issue is that neither Taylor or Kessens showed the ability enough to be physical posting up. Neither position themselves correctly either. The bad thing is, I don't think I've ever seen either attempt a hook shot, so the defense doesn't respect their ability to make a jump shot, so they know they can just load up on the basket and force either a turnover or them to pass the ball up.

Teams are doing exactly what they did vs Grant right now, which is playing zone and force Alabama to make shots from the perimeter. Watching Michigan State-Kansas last night was so relieving. I dream of a day where Alabama can play basketball like that. Ability to bank open shots, create successful pick and screens for an easy layup, force turnovers, better inside presence, etc..

Also, not to be an asshole here PJ, but while Dayton did make it to round 3, they were not in the sweet 16 last year. I believe they lost to Oklahoma. The year before however, Dayton made the elite 8, starting off with an upset over highly ranked Ohio State.

My bad on the sweet 16 thing. I heard one of the talking heads say that, and I didn't check it out.

In a physical game, Taylor has the body to post up, but Kessens still gets shoved around in the post. Towards the end of last season Taylor was having some success with a jump hook in the paint. I do cringe when he tries to put it on the floor. In a game called very tightly Kessens can have some success around the basket, but the more physical the game, the less effective he is.

The jury is still out on Hall. He has looked lost most of the time, but he has only two games of experience at this level. We definitely need to get a strong post player in this recruiting class. Have you seen anything about when Bolden will sign...
