James Coley
Miami Offensive Coordinator (2013 - Present)
AGE: 39
ALMA MATER: Florida State, 1997
EXPERIENCE:
SCOUTING REPORT: As offensive coordinator at both Florida State and Miami, Coley has run a very similar scheme to what Georgia has done with Mike Bobo as offensive coordinator. His offense is mostly pro-style with some spread looks mixed in. In his first season as offensive coordinator at Miami, the Hurricanes averaged 425.8 yards and 33.8 points per game. While at Florida State, he developed a reputation as being a strong recruiter and played significant role in bringing top 10 recruiting classes to Tallahassee. In his first year at Miami, he signed four-star QB Brad Kaaya, who started every game for the Hurricanes this season as a true freshman. Coley will always be linked to Nick Saban as he started out as a graduate assistant at LSU under Saban and followed him to the Dolphins where he was an offensive assistant for a couple years.
MOST APPEALING TRAITS: Strong recruiting background; runs mostly pro-style offense; learned from Nick Saban and Jimbo Fisher
POTENTIAL SNAGS: He's a Miami native that may not want to leave home
INTANGIBLES: Graduated from Florida State while Mark Richt was the offensive coordinator
Buster Faulkner
Middle Tennessee State Offensive Coordinator (2011 - Present)
AGE: 33
ALMA MATER: Valdosta State, 2005
EXPERIENCE:
SCOUTING REPORT: A native of Lilburn where he played at Parkview High before playing collegiately at Florida State, Faulkner is considered by some to be one of the better up-and-coming coaches with a background as a solid recruiter. A graduate assistant at Georgia under Bobo in 2006 where he helped mentor former Bulldog quarterback Matthew Stafford, Middle Tennessee has enjoyed unparalleled offensive success during his four-year stint in Murfreesboro. Included was a 2013 season in which the Blue Raider offense had the second most yards in school history, ranked 31st nationally in rushing, and 25th in third down conversion percentage.
MOST APPEALING TRAITS: Considered a strong recruiter who knows the state and a versatile offensive coach.
POTENTIAL SNAGS: Little major college experience
INTANGIBLES: Energetic, youthful coach who has something to prove.
Eddie Gran
Cincinnati Offensive Coordinator (2013 - Present)
AGE: 49
ALMA MATER: California Lutheran, 1987
EXPERIENCE:
SCOUTING REPORT: Gran is a proven commodity in the SEC, having coached with Tuberville at Auburn for six years, where he served as the team's running back coach when Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown were part of the Tiger squad. He has also established himself as one of the nation's top recruiters. He has spent the better part of two decades recruiting Miami and greater South Florida as his primary territory. He helped the Seminoles attract the nation's No. 1 recruiting class in 2011. At Florida State the Seminoles boasted the nation's second-best special teams unit in 2011 based on the Football Outsiders Efficiency Ratings. Shawn Powell became FSU's first consensus All-American punter and the school's all-time leader in multiple punting categories as a three-year starter. Powell led the Football Bowl Subdivision with a 47-yard overall average and the Seminoles ranked second nationally in net punting (41.3). Hopkins was named one of three finalists for the Lou Groza Award and Gran's return game featured some of the most electrifying players in Greg Reid, Joyner and Williams.
MOST APPEALING TRAITS: A proven coach in the SEC whose offenses have posted big numbers; extremely effective recruiter.
POTENTIAL SNAGS: Long-time relationship with Bearcat coach Tommy Tuberville could play a role.
INTANGIBLES: Smart, hard-working, very familiar with Bulldog coaching staff.
Doug Meacham
TCU Co-Offensive Coordinator (2013 - Present)
AGE: 50
ALMA MATER: Oklahoma State, 1988
EXPERIENCE:
CURRENT SALARY: $350,000 (Reported)
SCOUTING REPORT: In his first season at TCU, Meacham helped the Horned Frogs become one of the most potent offenses in the country. TCU racked up 562 points in their 12 games this season, which almost doubled their 2013 total of 301. TCU also broke school records this season in points, total offense, and passing yards and could set records in first downs and offensive plays during their bowl game. Meacham was a finalist this year for the Frank Broyles Award, which recognizes the nation's top assistant coach. Oklahoma State's offenses were also very prolific while Meacham was there. In five of his last six seasons in Stillwater, the Cowboys had a top 10 offense nationally and averaged over 40 points per game.
MOST APPEALING TRAITS: Could bring a new look to Georgia's offense with his background in the no-huddle, spread attack; has coached in the south his whole career; could open up Texas to the Dawgs on recruiting trail
POTENTIAL SNAGS: Originally from Arlington, TX and may not want to leave home; doesn't the run pro-style offense Richt seems to prefer
INTANGIBLES: His wife is a Georgia native.
Billy Napier
Alabama Wide Receivers Coach (2013 - Present)
AGE: 35
ALMA MATER: Furman, 2002
EXPERIENCE:
SCOUTING REPORT: As offensive coordinator at Clemson, Napier ran a pro-style offense. He coached Kyle Parker at Clemson in 2009 who earned freshman All-American status as a quarterback. During that 2009 season he led the Tigers to the most points scored in school history with 436 while also winning an ACC Atlantic Division Championship.
Napier is known for his ability to recruit offensive playmakers as he was the recruiting coordinator for the Clemson Tigers from 2006-2008. During that tenure, he brought in players like C.J. Spiller, Jacoby Ford, Andre Ellington, Dwayne Allen, and others.
While working at Alabama, he's coached the likes of Heisman finalist Amari Cooper and also continued building relationships with current and future recruits, especially within the southeast.
MOST APPEALING TRAITS: Runs mostly pro-style offense; coached under Jim McElwain at Colorado State who is now the head coach at Florida; was recruiting coordinator for Clemson from 2006-2008
POTENTIAL SNAGS: Would likely take a coordinator job or higher appealing title to pull from Alabama.
INTANGIBLES: In 2008, Napier signed Mark Richt's son Jon on a football scholarship at Clemson.
Kurt Roper
Florida Offensive Coordinator (2013 - Present)
AGE: 42
ALMA MATER: Rice, 1994
EXPERIENCE:
SCOUTING REPORT: Kurt Roper has one of the best resumes of any young offensive coordinator in the nation. The Ames, Iowa native began his full-time coaching career under David Cutcliffe at Ole Miss, and helped mold Eli Manning into becoming the number one pick in the NFL draft in 2004.
After a couple of quick stops at Kentucky and Tennessee, Roper reunited with Cutcliffe at Duke, where the pair worked to take the Blue Devils from a perennial bottom feeder to regularly competing in the ACC, even gaining a memorable Chik-Fil-A Bowl appearance and nearly upsetting Johnny Manziel and the Texas A&M Aggies.
This last season was his first with the Gators and he did receive a commitment from Treon Harris, who looked promising at times. Roper shouldn't be graded on his one year at Florida alone though, as it was never a good position for him to go into to begin with. His resume speaks for itself, and his ability to develop quarterbacks is impressive. Roper isn't the best recruiter, but if he is able to get the recruits on campus, he knows how to turn them into playmakers. Roper runs a similar pro-style type offense that the Bulldogs are used to, and have the players already in place for.
MOST APPEALING TRAITS: Excellent quarterback coach; runs mostly pro-style offense; learned from David Cutcliffe
POTENTIAL SNAGS: Not the best recruiter, lame duck season at UF might leave the wrong image
INTANGIBLES: Has strong ties with the SEC.
