Saban has found himself the Dr. Drew of the college football world with his coaching rehab center he has created in Tuscaloosa.
When Nick Saban showed up in Tuscaloosa in 2007, he came with a lot of perceived baggage brought on from the angry South Florida media who didn’t want to see him go after starting to turn the hapless Miami Dolphins into a decent NFL team. Confusion was written all over his face when he was greeted by thousands of grateful Alabama fans at the airport runway. Skeptics kept trying to chip away at Saban’s good name by stating he would be gone in three years and went on about how Saban is a mean person.

From the outside looking in, Saban might look like a bad guy. But to Crimson Tide fans, he is considered Jolly Saint Nick because Saban delivers in late December with a track record better then the postal service.

ICYMI: Players hurting their own brand by skipping bowls for NFL prep

Jolly Saint Nick isn’t planning on coming up short this year, either, as he has his little Crimson Tide elves in contention for its second straight national championship and fifth in the past eight seasons. While other coaches blame their shortcomings on such things as a new athletic director, Jolly Saint Nick has weathered all the winter storms thrown at him – not only a new athletic director but numerous offensive and defensive coaching changes – and just keep producing.

As if competing for national titles year after year and landing the No. 1 recruiting classes every year isn’t enough to fill Saban’s time, he has found himself the Dr. Drew of the college football world with his coaching rehab center he has created in Tuscaloosa.

If your coach is stagnant and needs to be taken out of their comfort zone, see what Dr. Saban did with now Florida Gator head coach Jim McElwain’s career. Maybe you are a young coach and need a professional mentor to learn from for a couple of years, take a look at the job Dr. Saban did with current Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. Perhaps you are a young, up-and-coming super-hot name in the coaching world that somehow lost his way and just needed a second chance that nobody wanted to offer … Dr. Saban is the cure-all for all your coaching needs. Lane Kiffin went from not being able to land a head coaching job at a high school to once again earning a head coaching position he wanted at Florida Atlantic.

New Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian.

This brings me to Dr. Saban’s current fixer-upper project: Steve Sarkisian. Here is a man who has been welcomed with open arms into the Alabama family by Jolly Saint Nick. Sark hasn’t been immune to life’s downfalls, and when things started to head south for him at Southern Cal he found himself fired – and destined for the Crimson Tide coaching rehab center.

Sark’s self-destructive actions were so intolerable that he was basically a coaching dead man walking. Saint Nick, being the master evaluator of all things college football, recognized Sarkisian’s talent and recruited him to the Alabama coaching staff as a special assistant to the offensive coordinator. So now that Kiffin has moved on to Florida Atlantic, Sark finds himself with another opportunity to clear his good name like his friend and predecessor Kiffin did.

When Saint Nick announced Sarkisian as Alabama’s new offensive coordinator, he had nothing but praise towards Sark in his efforts at keeping Alabama one of the most prolific offenses in the SEC. Saint Nick sent out this quote towards his detractors regarding his new offensive coordinator hire: ā€œI wouldn’t have anyone in the program I didn’t have faith, trust and confidence in.ā€ Saban said that Sarkisian is a part of the family now, and everybody is going to continue to help him be successful in life and in coaching.

I don’t think the Alabama family will have a problem bringing in another 5-star coaching hire as a early Christmas present. Thanks, Saint Nick!
