šŸˆ Nick Saban to Texas? Let's do it

With Mack Brown clearly closing in on the end of his coaching career and Alabama setting up residence at the top of college football’s food chain, rumors of Nick Saban leaving Tuscaloosa for Austin were bound to get fired up at some point.

Enter Ty Duffy of The Big Lead
, who posited in an article published Friday that the move is ā€œmore plausible than you might think,ā€ according to ā€œmultiple college football sources.ā€ TBL even ginned up an image of Nick Saban wearing a Longhorns polo to give the college football world an idea of what such an unholy union might actually look like if it were to come to fruition.

To me, this sounds more like a college football flight of fancy conjured up after one too many tequila shots at conference media days than a legit scenario. Scipio Tex of Barking Carnival does a great job of explaining why.

But, if we’re dealing in the fantastic: I hope to hell there are legs to this.

For starters, I’d love to see this happen for the simple reason that Saban represents just about everything that the University of Texas claims to despise. The Longhorns fetishize the NCAA rules; meanwhile, Saban defines ā€œloose constructionist,ā€ and his aggressive roster management philosophy makes a mockery of the notion of student-athletes.

More than just the hypocrisy of it all, though, I think it would be great for OU football.

I’ve written before about how Texas’ struggles on the field are inadvertently hurting the quality of OU’s product. Fair or not, when a flagship brand like Texas struggles, it diminishes the perception of the entire Big 12. It may be fun to watch the Sooners repeatedly abuse UT on those October Saturdays in the Cotton Bowl. With every touchdown and hurdled would-be tackler, however, the overall reputation of the Big 12 takes a big hit. (To be fair, OU has had its own hand in this, courtesy of some big game busts.)

With the SEC owning the national spotlight, the Big 12’s recruiting base is starting to look eastward. As such, Texas’ slide towards mediocrity couldn’t be more poorly timed.

Who better to get Texas back on course than Saban?

From a rivalry standpoint, I understand why the combination of one of college football’s greatest coaches with Texas’ recruiting ground and resources doesn't sound fun. Kicking the tar out of Bevo looks a whole lot less likely when you sub in Saban for Mack Brown on the sidelines. The prospect of the Longhorns standing on that podium in January hoisting the crystal ball (or whatever we’ll get next) seems far too real.

Yet, I also remember what it was like when DeLoss Dodds hired Mack at Texas back in 1998. The general consensus was that he was the perfect choice to take UT football back to the top of the mountain. He immediately started reeling in elite recruits from around the country and quickly developed one of the most talented rosters in college football. That really hasn’t changed in the last 15 years.

Of course, Oklahoma hired Bob Stoops in 1999 and has essentially owned the Red River rivalry ever since. It’s still a pattern that has repeated itself in the past: The Longhorns punch, the Sooners counterpunch.

While fans obsess over dynasty-building and hoarding hardware, college football writ large tends to operate under the guiding principle that iron sharpens iron. Competition forces innovation and evolution to keep up. Look no farther than Saban's current home, the SEC, for proof.

So, if there's anything I can do to help make this happen, DeLoss, let me know.

According to "multiple college sources" Eryk Anders broke Texas football. TX should hire him!

On a serious note, word around the football complex says Saban plans on coaching eight more years...

I'd expect Texas to make a run at CNS, if they don't, it will speak volumes about their program. Do they go after a "hired gun" or do they roll the dice on an "up and comer"?

There are more reports that this could be Mack's final year. Not sure if that is just wishful thinking at this point by the fans.

While maybe not a majority, a significant portion of the Longhorn fan base is sick of Mack and ready for him to go. Hire CNS? Why should Nick go? Perhaps Muschamp, if he has a good year this time.

I want Coach Saban to stay here till he retires, but if he decides to take on a new challenge elsewhere that's fine by me. He has done exactly what he needed to do here, bring Championships to The Capstone. What college coach wouldn't want to come to Bama when he leaves/retires anyways? I see him finishing his career at The Capstone and moving into Alabama folklore 20 years from now with another statue of another coach rising up in front of Bryant-Denny-Saban Stadium. :tennis: The Tradition will always continue, far after all of us leave this world. I say enjoy it while its here.

One of my co-workers is a UT grad and he has been calling his head since 2010. I think the majority are ready for him to go. Not sure about hiring Nick Saban. For one, I doubt Saban would like to deal with that Longhorn Network. Nick Saban Show might be enough for him. Secondly, I saw someone mention this on WoollyAl, but Terry Saban loves it out in Tuscaloosa. Not sure she would be willing to move out of here to move into a big city like Austin, though Austin is a very nice place.

As long as Nick is winning and does not get caught molesting a boy scout, his name will continue to be tossed about for every "major" college football vacancy or near vacancy. If you talk long enough, you can come up with solid arguements to convince yourself he will never leave Bama or is about to move on to the next challenge. This is part of the price we pay for the processes success.

Amen.

I would hate to see him go, and I really don't think he will leave for Texas. Having said that, and I hope I would be able to maintain this attitude in the moment, I would have to have a great deal of gratitude for what he has accomplished here already. I would also like to think that when someday the moment comes, he can be followed up with an existing staff member - like Kirby - who will maintain "the process." Stay here with until you retire, please Coach Saban. We truly appreciate you!!

If money is the motivator... I don't think it is with Saban. I may be wrong, as I often am. I think he plans to stay here a few more years, win more championships than Bear, and retire as probably the most successful coach in the history of college football. Look at what he has lined up.

Why in the name of hell would Nick consider something like Texas?

The only place that he might consider is West Virginia...going home...to finish his career...after another five to seven years at BAMA

And that is a long, long shot
