He'll definitely retire from Bama but I'd be shocked if he finishes out this contract. I don't know why, I just don't see him coaching until he's almost 70.
It is safe to assume he isn't leaving for another job though. He just isn't built for NFL jobs and why on earth would he leave to go to another college? What job is more appealing? Bama will keep him among the highest paid, he's got recruiting steam rolling. Why start over? I'd like to know the other jobs he was asked about. I'd also like to know why they wasted their time.
Duder, if you were able to take in a practice, you would think twice about him not finishing out his contract. He is hands on in each defensive and special teams drill. He runs drills, throws balls, and chews ass all practice long. Now, he could have some serious accident, or bad health could pop up on him and cause him to not finish the contrct, BUT I doubt he will leave by any other means.
It is a simple fact that people are living a lot longer AND their standard of living has been getting better too. There is a saying in my circles that 77 is the new 65. For all that I can tell CNS is in great shape & as long as he has his whits about him & he is able to effectively coach on that practice field, then he will be there.
There is no question that he is a Hall of Fame coach. In a profession of guys who live for their obsession he is the one that wears them down, gets them fired, or sends them to the hospital. He is unlike almost any human that we know, and that is why I think that he will coach as long as he can. He is cut from the same fabric as Coach Bryant and Coach Paterno. He will retire shortly before he dies from not having coaching in his life, as sad of a thought as that is I beleive that this is who he is.
I wouldn't be surprised either way. Saban seems to me to be one of those guys that would go crazy without being able to coach. I don't see him retiring before age 70.
I'm with you, I get a good amount of fulfillment from work but it's also time consuming and stressful. I'm gone in nine, ten years tops depending on the market. Saban, on the other hand, could have retired upon leaving Miami, likely sooner, if he was only looking for a secure retirement. Many highly compensated professionals, not just coaches, continue to work to and beyond "normal" retirement age. They either find great satisfaction from their work, or have no identity outside of their professions. I'll not venture which is more prevalent, but I will declare that Heinzelmannchen Brewery (Sylva, NC), Lexington Avenue Brewery (Asheville) and Roth Brewery (Raleigh) are all worthy pursuits should you find yourself in the Tarheel State.
