Nick Saban has another team on the edge of history, but it still has a long way to go

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — It’s the word that starts to especially come up this time of the year, although Nick Saban uses it year-around: “Finish.”

Alabama players hear it all the time from the coaches and support staffers. Finish the drill. Finish the play. Finish the practice.

Finish the game.

Finish the season.

Finish. Finish. Finish.

It was even on the celebratory poster after Alabama won the 2011 national championship.

What’s this team won so far? Nothing except locking up a bowl bid. No. 1 Alabama is 8-0 and blown out every opponent, but the only thing that’s significant different from the previous 10 seasons is that the offense is so potent and dangerous it should have to be registered with a government agency.

From here on in the intensity only grows against every opponent except The Citadel, this year’s version of the expendable crew member from Star Trek. Each win brings Alabama closer to one of its annual goals, of winning the division, the league, the playoff/bowl game and finally the national title. It celebrates each with a ring.

One stumble and everything is still possible. With two nothing is.

“Coach Saban pointed out to us that we've been 8-0 at this point in the season, I think, nine or 10 times out of the year's he's been here and only finished undefeated once,” junior left tackle Jonah Williams said. “So that's a challenge for us moving forward.
“We can be proud of what we've done so far, but it really doesn't matter from here on out. The way we define the season happens from here and January.”

Actually, Alabama has only been 8-0 at this point of the season seven times under Saban, but at least 7-1 every year since 2008.
