⚾ 🥎 Nice read on softball: Alabama Softball Uses Speed To Create Havoc

Murphy points out, “Speed kills.”

“We try to win the freebie war every game – a walk, hit by pitch, error, wild pitch, passed ball – anything that gives us a free base. Usually when you add it all up after a season, whichever team wins that war in every game will win the game. We’ve done a heck of a good job.

“We’re 19 out of 20 in stolen bases. It’s ridiculous.” Opponents, by the way, are 0-0.

At the top of the list is Elissa Brown, considered by Murphy to be the fastest woman in college softball. Brown is 5-9 at the plate and also has a base on balls. To that she has added 9 stolen bases in 9 attempts. Alexis Mack is 4-5 in stolen bases and KB Sides 3-3.

“We’re going to use the green light girls,” Murphy said, alluding to his practice of giving certain players the option to make their own decisions as to when to steal bases. “That’s what they do best. They can steal bases.

“We’re going to continue to run.

“Our execution can be better – hit-and-run, slap-and-run, bunt-and-run those things – because we have some young ladies who can really handle the bat, lefties and righties.”

Murphy gave an example of how that puts pressure on the defense.

With a runner on first “the shortstop decides to cover second. We hit-and-run and she just vacated that hole and our hitter can put a ground ball right there. So the girl on first is all the way to third and if the outfielder makes a mistake and throws to third, our hitter goes into second base and we have runners at second and third.

“Speed creates havoc.

“Our speed caused a couple of errors by Notre Dame. Sometimes the speed of the game overwhelms people.
