Maurice Smith, parents speak out about ongoing battle with Alabama

"Working around football, Smith's mother has seen players at various schools become scholarship limit casualties and have their scholarships pulled. She says she was concerned that could happen to Maurice, who had gone from the favorite to win the Tide's nickel back job entering fall camp last year to playing strictly on special teams." Really? I'd have to check each game, but I believe that Smith was on the field for many, if not all of the games, in some capacity, on DEFENSE. And she says she's concerned..... I don't know where she has seen scholarships pulled living over in Houston. I am not saying that it doesn't occur, or that it CAN'T occur, or that is shouldn't occur, but I'd like her to tell us an example she REALLY heard of - he doesn't say he asked her that, and he doesn't CONFIRM his contention that Mo Smith was only playing special teams. I can tell you that, in the SEC and National Championship games, he DID play on defense!

"So that made it a surprise when Saban called him into his office the next day and exploded." Now, I have seen Saban explode at players, but shouldn't it have said 'allegedly exploded'? In the NEXT paragraph he goes on to say "This is the way Maurice described that meeting to his parents."

"What made it worse is that Smith, who was already frustrated with how the season was playing out, had no idea why he was being yelled at until later in the meeting.

"I think that meeting right there severed the umbilical cord because Maurice was like, 'I'm not able to trust this man,'" Maurice's father, Maurice I, said." First, is that SABAN'S fault that Mo Smith had no idea??!! Maybe he should thank his meddling mom for that - I mean, the kid is 21 and has been in the program for 3 years, and she is fighting his battles? But Zenitz doesn't bother to ask her why she did that behind her son's back...
[and really, Mo's father goes by Maurice I? Did he ASK to be referred to that way? 'Cause I have NEVER, EVER seen that before]

"Saban, according to Smith's father, told Smith that he would prefer to move cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick inside to play nickel back when Alabama goes into its nickel and dime defenses. Why was that a problem?" So now we are not getting the story second hand, from Mo Smith, but THIRDHAND, from Maurice I.

"Saban had already told Smith that he feels like Smith is a better fit at safety than at cornerback. "So Maurice was thinking, 'OK, so if you find someone that can come in and play corner, that means that Minkah will be at (nickel back) and I'll be out.'" Smith's father said." Zenitz is not careful to point out that this is still ALLEGEDLY what Saban said - actually, it doesn't really make sense with what we have seen on the field, but who knows, it might be true.

Also interesting that the mom would ask the son, AND the dad, to leave the room. Wonder what her pants size is - it's obviously the biggest in the family! I mean, really lady? But nothing from Zenitz asking why she did that.

And interesting that Mo was 'on track' to graduate in May. It might have helped his cause - not sure what happened there, and apparently Zenitz doesn't care to know, so we won't either unless a GOOD reporter follows up on it.

Finally, nothing by Zenitz saying that the compliance people OR Saban were asked to comment on the story before it was published, and what their response was. Did he even ask??

Crap job by this reporter, regardless of the fact that I may simply not appreciate Saban being put in a bad light.

If Mo thinks that he can go and start at UGA, maybe Kirby told him so, and maybe he could. And MAYBE it would help his chances in being drafted. We will never know.

Saban probably doesn't care, and he can take care of himself, but the whole way the article was written was, to me, unprofessional, one-sided to stir the pot, and was more or less a slam on Saban AND the Univeristy, and I don't appreciate it.

Roll Tide

Maurice has lost trust that Saban will give him playing time even if he stays. Fine, but he also wants what he wants. He said at the end of the video he's willing to sacrifice to change this for someone else and again he wants to be at Georgia. It's Mo's sacrifice to make but it's starting to look a lot like he's going to have the same football vantage point this season as me and the mrs.

This whole thing has been poorly handled, the Smith's got some poor guidance to handle this like they have.

Agreed - it's almost like momma went over to the pee wee coach and said, "How can we get my kid more playing time? If you won't play him can't we put him on another team?" That's how silly and stupidly this was handled. Mo should be embarrassed by his mom AND his dad - his DAD should have put the quiatus on this but maybe he never even knew what the Mrs. was doing.

Is this not a typical event when it comes to a loud mouthed know it all momma? Now the kid fucked up his chance at playing ball this year anywhere for the most part. So instead of helping her child, she has him in between a rock and a hardplace, because it's late to be joining a team and getting a starting spot. Love it when they claim to be fighting for their kids, yet they're too fucking dumb to realize how stupid they truly are and how it's negatively affecting the ones they're supposed to be protecting .

Think this is playing out like UGA wants?

No doubt. Kirby is pushing buttons with this more than any of the media want/choose to report as are those in the "Georgia network" of supporters. I'm not surprised, at all, Smart has chosen to move in this direction with getting those in the "network" involved in the program.

How he's chosen to "draw a line in the sand" with recruiting and Bama? There's a subject deserving its criticism.

I'm definitely not the most literate on the issue of transfer rules, but it seems to me that the mom is emphasizing Maurice's status as a grad student as the loophole to transferring within the conference. Does she have a point?

She does, as long as she's willing to let Mo sit a year.

Considering he just brought this up (UGA) and he was asking for a transfer back in June? No, she has no point.

Mo was going to be allowed to transfer to Miami. He (along with Kirby and his crew) brought UGA into the picture.

Bottom line, you've got the mother of a adult emailing his coach complaining about playing time. A mother, of an adult.

I can def see why Smith doesn't trust Saban/staff in regards to what role he's being told he will have. No telling what the staff has told him before, during, and after the recruiting process and he's been moved around quite a bit. Not to mention the fact that Tony Brown has been given chance after chance, and after the 4 game suspension will likely come back ahead of Smith.

That being said, the media circus is just silly. I'm still in the belief that Saban flubbing the Chris Black situation opened the door for criticism, but Smith family screaming bloody murder is annoying.

Shame that they couldn't get on the same page considering Smith would have played some legit snaps, especially early in the season. No doubt Saban tried to keep him around by renewing his scholarship after the fact. But the damage is done and the quicker everyone moves along the better.

First of all, doesn't the SEC have a rule that graduates are not allowed to transfer to other SEC schools? I believe Saban is following the SEC rule, so he is in the right. Second, Saban has had no problems with any of the other dozens of players who have left the program, so why is this case special? It's special because all of the other players transferred the right way, sitting out the required year or going to non-sec schools. Mo Smith and his mommy feel like they deserve special treatment and the rules don't apply to them. And if people haven't figured out by now that Saban is a stickler for doing things the way they are supposed to be done, then they haven't been paying attention. Saban is doing the right thing by following the rules. Mo Smith and his mommy should just accept that and move on. If he came to Saban tomorrow and said I want to transfer to Georgia Tech, or North Carolina, or Michigan, Saban would say great, see ya. This has been blown out of proportion and spun into a negative by the manipulative media who try to make stories rather than just reporting them.

I read somewhere that Mo wanted to transfer to Baylor and that Saban had agreed to sign off on it and then all of that mess happened there and Mo renigged. Then Miami became a player, but then Smart and UGA contacted the family and it has all gone downhill from there. The mom wants to point to Chris Black as the template for Mo being allowed to leave. You know that if it was some clerical error that allowed Black to go to Mizzou, then Saban is going to make damn sure no mistakes are made again!! If Mo wants to go to UGA so damn bad, go ahead!! Pay your own way this year like a regular grad student and sit out a year!!!

Hmm so Smart actually wants Maurice so badly that he's willing to have him sit out this season with only one season of eligibility next season???

No!!! Smart wants him to plug and play. Each one gets a benefit - Smith gets immediate playing time, Smart gets an experienced player for the secondary in his system.

But it's been stated in this thread that a graduate must sit out a season before playing at another member school. Why would Smart try to cause drama for his former boss like this when the rule presently forbids this??
