🏈 NFL could eliminate the extra point. Would college football ever do it?

I would like to see more of a challenge for the extra point. We need something that would add 1 point. What is wrong with making the goal post 5 feet narrower? That would add a challenge. Here is a pic of our kickers practising on narrow goal post

i say do that PLUS move the kick back at least 5 yards.

Narrow goal posts and/or moving the kick back are good ideas. I also like the idea of implementing the Uno like they have in Arena ball. If the kickoff goes through the uprights, the kicking team gets a point. Not a lot of kickers could do it right now, but I would bet it would change a lot about the game in the long run.

I think that rule is based on Canadian football.

Also, from Wikipedia:

"The AIF recognizes the single (also known as an uno or rouge). If a kickoff goes through the uprights, or if the receiving team does not advance the ball out of the end zone on a kickoff, the kicking team is awarded one point and the ball is spotted at the opponent's five yard line."

That's kind of a neat rule. I also like that if the receiving team doesn't advance it, the kicking team gets a point. This would create a lot more emphasis on skill in the kicking position, and make it more interesting.

I think if the goal posts moved rapidly in and out and the kicker had to time it just right to get in would be more fun.

but on a serious note, the extra point mattered against michigan about 15 years ago.

as much as a waste of time as it seems to be, it's as much a part of the game as a helmet and cleats to me. i don't think it should be changed.

Another idea is to make them go for two points and if they get two then they get to kick the extra point. That would change everything. When I was in high school we had 15 players on the team including the freshmen. We never kicked extra points unless we needed it to tie. We just didn't have a kicker that could do it. A lot of teams that we played didn't kick the extra point very often. We had a lot of games with no more than two touchdowns. Defence was the game plan. Senior class of 1969. :td:I am just glad to be here.

I like that idea. But I would bet people focused on safety would hate it because no kid is going to knee the ball if that happens. Every kick that doesn't go out of the end zone is coming out.

First of all :chat_biggrin_BFGL: for reminding me of Phlugner.

That's a game that never should have been down to an extra point. Hell, we blew two 14 point leads.

On the ironic side of that season, the game won in Gainesville had the Florida kicker missing an extra point as well.

Most kickers handle kickoffs but some punters do too... I have no clue how getting rid of the extra point would devalue the kickers, that makes no sense to me. You think coaches covet kickers for their place kicking rather than a 50 yard field goal with 2 seconds left? Most punters could even kick the damn extra point.

I'm just trying to look at it through the player's union's eyes. And rarely ever do union activities make sense to me. But that's a different topic for a different day.

I caught an interview with Don Shula this morning and he said he was in favor or getting rid of the extra point. It was pointed out one of his Super Bowl appearances was due to a missed kick.

Of the voting public, the number was around 75% in favor of keeping it in the NFL.
