NBC Sports NFL analyst Chris Simms recently released his ranking of the top 40 quarterbacks in the league heading into the 2020 season. Some of the rankings that had fans talking: Joe Burrow at No. 26, Jarrett Stidham at No. 35 and the absence of Tua Tagovailoa .
All three former SEC QBs came up during Simms’ recent appearance on

“(Stidham is) more talented than Tua,” Simms said. “(Tua) is a creation of Alabama. You don’t think Jarrett Stidham, or like (former Oregon QB) Justin Herbert would have set the world on fire if they got to play with four, first-round receivers and two, first-round tackles?”

Simms made similar points when comparing Burrow and Tagovailoa: Burrow made NFL throws while Tagovailoa’s stats are a credit to his receivers.
“The difference between Tua and Joe Burrow is when I evaluated them, Joe Burrow makes way more high-level, NFL-type throws — people not open, protection not good, he still makes a play. You have a hard time finding that on any of Tua’s tapes,” Simms said. “I don’t give Tua credit when I go, ‘He threw the five-yard slant to a wide-open guy and he ran 80 yards. Woah, he’s so amazing. He’s the only guy who can do that.’ Or like the three receivers on the right all run across the formation and pick for the backfield, the back coming out of the backfield, and he throws a four-yard pass to the only guy who it was intended for on the play and we all go, ‘Look at the quarterback play by Tua.’
“That is the perfect example of what you’re doing for me there. You’re giving all the accolades, Alabama kicks the crap out of everybody for the last 15 years with all these quarterbacks, but now you want to tell me Tua is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I don’t agree with that.”
All three are in the mix to be their team’s starting quarterback this fall. Crimson Tide and Miami Dolphin fans will be sure to remind Simms if his hot take favoring a fourth-round pick over a high first-round pick turns into a freezing cold take.

Stidham was an outstanding QB...at Baylor, by Big 12 standards. He wasn’t SEC good. Transferring to the barn was not a good move. Malzahn got a hold of him...nuff said. But...Stidham is not in the same category as Tua. Stidham would have overthrown and underthrown Waddle, Riggs, Smith, and Juedy consistently had he played on the same team as them.

Not Tua's fault he's college receivers were so good. Let's not forget Tua was raved over well before he played a down for Bama. Didn't he win the Elite Eleven camp? Didn't those coaches say they had never seen someone like him before?

Tua's talent is his accuracy. If he can hit WR in the NFL with that same accuracy... he'll be just fine.
100% agree...Accurately and quickly.....
But....for a minute....
His backup threw for 400+ yards vs AU .....( not including the 2 pick 6)....
Those group of receivers....man...so awesome...
Tua was special...one of the most exciting players i have ever seen...ever...
I put him and Namath asthe 2 most exciting players i have seen at Bama...
But those receivers didturn 10-20 yards gains into 70-80 yards TDs....

Cant put anybody in recent times in catagory with TUA.... ( well, maybe those 2 Oklahoma QBs),.... definitely not Stidham....that i saw...anyway

Just an idiotic take. Tua did it as a Freshman in the Natty with a freshman running back, a freshman left tackle, and two freshmen receivers. All unpolished at that point mind you, and coaches raved about how he looked off the safety, an NFL veteran move. That's not even talking about his 2nd and 3rd year stats. Yes, great athletes, but he also did it before they were NFL first rounders and veteran college players.

And to emphasis ur point...
They didn’t do it ( wih consistently) when JH was QB before second half of NC game....

Those wide receivers don' turn half of those catches into 70-80 yards run without the QB hitting them in stride at full speed.... It goes both ways. The WR need to be good to get off the line and run the correct route to the correct location and the QB has to be good enough to him them in stride at the expected point. Are Tua's stats as good without good WR, no... but that doesn't diminish his talent and/or ability.

No doubt, great receivers, but there are great receivers in the NFL too... so if he can hit them with the same accuracy and expectancy (IE the WR can run full speed and expect the ball on target)... then he'll do very well in the NFL if they can protect him.

All true....
We shall see how nfl works out...
