📡 Nearly the entire Grayson team (GA HS football) – concerned for their health – staged a walkout, protesting “rough” practice conditions

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Christian Hunnicutt will remain Grayson’s head coach following a team boycott that took place on Wednesday, sources confirmed to Score Atlanta and the AJC’s Adam Krohn.

Nearly all of Grayson’s players protested Hunnicutt’s practice conditions, which involved full-force hitting in shorts, a source said.

Players walked out of practice on Wednesday, which led to a meeting between Hunnicutt and the players.

During the meeting, Hunnicutt apologized for the rough practice conditions and promised lighter practices moving forward.
Channel 2's Richard Elliot spoke with one parent, who said the coach handled the situation the best he could.

"He's a tough coach, but he's a fair coach," parent Lorriane Lindsey said.

Lindsey told Channel 2 most of the players never showed up for practice Wednesday because they were concerned about its intensity.
Her son did not participate in the walkout but confirmed the coach met with the entire team.

“He personally just opened up, talked from his heart, saying there were going to be some positive charge. That was the gist of that conversation," Lindsey said.

Just a case of this new age protest BS. These guys aren't wanting to do what it takes to be Champions like those before them. The whole Maryland deal is abuse, but making your guys hit is not abuse. I'm sure they kept them hydrated, pretty sure they didn't put a 5'5 100lbs Freshman against a 6'7 300lbs in full contact drills, just a case of hurt feelings is my guess.

The kids these days. I can’t comment on their treatment but when I grew up the coach made us practice drills until some of us(not me) puked, before hydration.and yes, I was a skinny white kid at 5’4” sophomore that went up against 6’3” and bigger boys on a daily basis. Most of the boys my size didn’t have the fight in them and didn’t hit very hard. Hell, my sister hit harder than some of them.

Grayson is loaded with elite players. If those kids walked out something is wrong.

If it was the coach there would be a pattern. He's coached top programs all over the state without issue, so I think some fellas got their feelings hurt. Even the parents arre on the coach's side.

Which parents?

Let me know what Kenyatta Watson thinks and that will tell me what I need to know.

Never said I knew what all the parents or certain players thought, just stating what is being reported. Read the AJC. If he's your son, maybe you can offer us more than just his side of things, because there are multiple sides to every story.

Maybe tell that to those thinking this is just a case of kids these days and making weak associations to our political climate. That's just lazy, worthless, divisive commentary. We can do better than that

Well let's put a few things together here since you consider what I said as "lazy". Grayson has been putting out top talent for about fifteen years. Old coach got a new gig, they brought in a guy familiar with the program, great experience at top tier programs in the state of Georgia. He knkws what he is doing ladies and gentlemen. You are going to sit there and call my argument over weak minded premodonna type players as lazy, when we know the program is watched over very closely as Georgia's perinneal top program. With all of the rules associated and put on these teams, you're going to listen to the argument of 14-18 year olds that all they have complained about it being full hitting with shorts on? No abuse, no hazing, no injuries, accidents, or anything else to back up the abussive claims, and yet you want to call my argument lazy? It's not necessarily a political point I'm making, but these BS political walk outs, protests, and overall disturbing acts againsy society we are seeing daily set all this crap up. We're talking moreso about a generation that spends their time playing video games, Instagramming, Snapchatting, and eating Tide Pods, not one that is known for hard work in general. Now any time someone feels the slightest bit of adversity they drop a hastag, send a tweet, post a video or some other crap to gain the sympathy of folks like yourself. The whole mentality at Grayson has changed with the high profile they carry and these guys are premodonnas. I know folks close to the program talking about the change that's been happening for over ten years, and it's only getting worse. They think Grayson was hard??? Just wait till they hit the 4th Quarter Program at Alabama, the offseason at Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia where they aren't pampered. I'm not being divisive, just calling a spade a spade and if you're in too deep of a sleep to see what's happening right in front of your eyes, maybe you're just being beligerant about your weak ability to put two and two together.

Funny thing I've seen you provide very little facts in this thread. I have absolutely no clue if what these players is saying is true or if they've really been mistreated but you've based a very strong opinion on very little actual knowledge of the situation yourself.

By the way, going full contact in shells (shoulder pad and helmets) is against AHSAA rules, don't know about Georgia but I would assume it's the same.

1) Practice issues that led to the walkout of several players on the Grayson High football team have been resolved, according to a report.
2) Nearly all of Grayson’s players protested Hunnicutt’s practice conditions, which involved full-force hitting in shorts, a source said.

Here's where I'm having flags thrown up in the air. Notice, the last quote versus the first quote (all the while the second is quoting/citing the first article for its source.)

These are not the same thing.

So, when I see "which involved full-force hitting in shorts" versus what we've seen for years--full contact practices--I don't see them as the same thing like @alagator has posted. We've seen Bama's practices and hitting referred to as "thud" for years.

Something is amiss here. If we want to use lazy shouldn't that be applied to the WSB writer who put the tweet/link out there? I realize there's only a few words that have been changed but those few words change the context of the entire piece.

One thing we do know. Some kid got upset because practice was rough and then turned to another team member to complain. Those two in turn went to another...

I can’t comment on their treatment but when I grew up the coach made us practice drills until some of us(not me) puked, before hydration.and yes, I was a skinny white kid at 5’4” sophomore that went up against 6’3” and bigger boys on a daily basis.

That gives you every right to comment, in my view. You've been there, done that, like many others have.

One thing I"m struck by is the mentality of "having to put in the work" is part of the culture that Kirby is trying to change at UGA. It's one of the big things they've lacked under Richt, Donnan, et. al.

Try re-reading and maybe you'll see where I have relayed information from people I stated that I knew within the program and used parental quotes from the newspaper as my evidence. The coach's resume is public information anyone can look up, so evidence of his past is readily available. My strong opinion about weak minded kids today is the opinion, not the truth about what they "experienced". As far as GHSA rules what they call "THUD" is allowed, which is subjective at best, but still allows for "competitive" speed.
