That big bump you see in the road is the Players Association is what I'm thinking.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OAKLAND, Calif. — NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league and the NBA Players Association will take the next year to study the possibility of changing the eligibility rules for the draft. Silver cited concern about curtailing the burgeoning number of one-and-done players leaving college to enter the NBA Draft.

During collective-bargaining negotiations, the league asked to raise the minimum age for eligibility from 19 to 20 while the union sought to lower the age to 18. Both sides agreed to table that discussion in order to finalize a new CBA.

ā€œI think we all agreed that we need to make a change,ā€ Silver said. ā€œThis year, the projection is that we’re going to have 20 one-and-done players coming and actually being drafted. When we first changed the minimum age from 18 to 19, the following year in 2006, we had two one-and-done players. So my sense is that it’s not working for anyone.ā€

Silver said NBA teams believe players coming from the U.S. college ranks after just one year aren’t as well-prepared as they should be, and of course, colleges would prefer to hold on to their best players longer. Silver drew a distinction with many international players entering the league after already having as much as three years of professional experience with club teams.

The opening of the NBA Finals was marred a day earlier by an incident in which a Los Angeles home owned by Cavaliers star LeBron James was vandalized by someone who spray-painted a racial epithet on the front gate. James cited it as evidence that a deep vein of racism persists in America and the world, and Silver echoed those remarks.

ā€œIt’s a sad state of affairs,ā€ Silver said. ā€œI don’t think there’s any doubt that we still live with these types of issues in our society. I think there’s a strong history in this league of speaking out on issues of inequality, of racial injustice. LeBron himself has been incredibly articulate on these issues, as he was the other day. I think this platform we have in sports is an opportunity to continue to unify people.ā€

Silver also was questioned about comments Knicks president Phil Jackson made about his desire to trade Carmelo Anthony and whether there will be any discipline. ā€œWe did not consider disciplining Phil Jackson for those comments about potentially trading Carmelo,ā€ Silver said. ā€œThe view of the league is that it’s not reciprocal. Players can’t trade themselves. Teams can trade players. So there’s never been a history of fining a team or disciplining a team executive for talking about trading a player.ā€

Silver touched on a host of other issues, most notably saying the league agreed to add one week to the schedule next season to allow more rest between games and cut down on instances of teams resting starters who are not injured. He agreed there is a correlation between fatigue and injury and added, ā€œA certain amount of resting is inevitable and appropriate.ā€

This will be a fight but it is the right thing for everyone involved. Right now kids who aren't ready, that are being pumped up by handlers are still making bad decisions to come out early.. even with the rule that they can test the waters and come back. NBA teams have been forced to take kids before they are ready based on what they might turn in to and discard kids who aren't developing fast enough before they have a chance to really get better. It waters down the NBA talent badly so I can see why the teams want it changed.

It also hurts the college teams because they have kids leaving early that could benefit their programs for a few years. But most of all this would take the decision out of the hands of these over hyped kids, money grubbing family members and "friends" and allow the kid time to actually improve their game, maybe decide that they want to finish their education.

My boys play on the AAU circuit and we see these kids first hand and the hype around them. Trust me with some of these top kids, there are several people involved, in the players ear and the farther removed they are from that crowd and allowed to learn in a college culture without the circus of idiots trying to tell them that they are the next Lebron the better. Maybe an extra year will allow some of those leeches to fall off while the kid gets a little wiser to what is going on.

Really!!!!!! Leeches have to be scrapped off....they dont go away on their own..an extra year of college aint going to do nuthin'
Especially if they are NBA quality......thats millions and millions....
Not really disagreeing....though...But these boys are being told they are millionaires in the making....and thats better green then most leeches will ever get.....would be nice to be 2 years removed from HS.....but thats for the fans...
And when have we as fans ever mattered

We fans are the money behind it all actually. No one goes to these games, bus the merchandise, or even watches, then there are no endorsements, tv contracts, or money for their contracts.

The primary leeches are the AAU coaches and if it is two years down the line the kid is another year smarter that he doesn't owe that guy anything. Friends change once you get to college but the parents will still be there to push I guess.

I am just saying sometimes if you can delay that gratification some.. some of those guys hanging around will get tired of waiting or will get scraped off, found out or what have you.

Right we do pay and buy......go to games...etc....
But ....if I don't go....because of my reasons...there is somebody else grabbing my ticket...Kentucky has more one n dones..and you cant get into a KY Bball game...
Desire and demand... thats why I say...we dont matter...if we were a fans union we could matter...but we are lone sheep fed on by the wolves...
Theoretically...i agree with you.but reality isnt there....when millions $$$ are involved

I gotcha. I thought you were saying fans as a whole. In that case I completely agree, there are people waiting to step in behind us individually, I agree.

You mean if this passes UK will actually have to make their players academically eligible? :naughtydevil:

Yep which I think will help places like Bama who have a tremendous student center to help guys stay eligible. I think you will also see an increase of high school kids going to play in Europe for two years. I think that will eventually work it self out as the leagues in Europe are operated by some shrewd characters.

This would hurt Kentucky for a year or two but they would adjust. Calapari knows what he is doing and skates just inside the rules.. and sometimes has peeked over the edge.

In all honesty, UK keeping a line up for two full years may lead to some NC's.

Having to get kids who plan on staying qualified for two years is a different stradegy than he has now. It may slow him more than you think. Currently he recruits the kids who have zero intention of an education and plan on only one year..not really even need to go to class and hope to be drafted after they have spent one semester on campus not going to class. When you actually have to recruit some who can play for a few years.. it changesthe quality of kid you are looking at and the number of competitors recruiting him.

There's always Liberal Arts. :-)

I can think of a number of freshmen groups who would have done some serious damage had they stayed another year. Karl-Anthony-Towns group for one. I've alway been a firm believer in the old adage, a player makes the most improvement between his freshman and sophomore year. Of course the same blue-bloods Kentucky will be playing will also have the same advantage.

I need a little help on this. Why are the requirements different for football, baseball, basketball, and other sports? Does it fall with the profeasional level and their agreements, or is it the NCAA that set these terms?
