In 1986, my wife, 8 year old son, 5 year old daughter and I went to Starkville to see Bama play State. Van Tiffin was on the verge of breaking the all time record for PATs and in fact tied and broke the record during that ballgame. We were seated in the upper deck in the middle of State fans without a Bama fan anywhere near us. As the game rolled on, Bama took control and when we would score, we'd stand to our feet and clap our hands. No excessive celebrations mind you or anything obnoxious, just a show of appreciation for what Bama had done.
One State fan seated 2 rows directly behind us, had drank a little too much liquid courage and was cussing loudly, most of it directed at us. At first, he was just obnoxious. Bama soon scored the TD that would let Tiffin tie the record, we jumped to our feet and clapped. The drunk said, loud enough to be heard by everyone, "Hey Bammer, sit yore ass down. The next time you stand up, I'm going to throw your ass off the side and those brats with you." A lot of those sitting around him laughed and a few high-fived the jerk as Tiffin kicked the extra point. My wife pulled me down and asked, "What are we going to do?" I said, "We're going to watch the rest of the ballgame."
As we waited for the kick off, my wife said, "We'd better go." She knew that while she might be able to sit down for the rest of the game there was no way that I would be able to if Bama scored again. The drunk was laughing, cussing and daring me to stand up. A few minutes later a security officer came up and stood in the aisle near the front edge of the upper deck and I went to talk with him. I told him what the drunk had said and he said, "I'll take care of it" and left. The drunk was yelling as I came back to my seat, "He's not going to help you, he's on our side." Several of the people sitting around thought it was funny.
I sat back down and my wife said again, "We got to go." I didn't want to leave but didn't want trouble with the wife and kids with me either. Just about that time the security officer and 3 other officers came up, asked the drunk to come with them and when he refused, grabbed him and literally dragged him and one of his buddies out. It was a different atmosphere after that, and it wasn't long before several of the State fans apologized for the drunk's behavior. Someone bought my kids popcorn and bragged about how well behaved they were. Bama rolled 38 to 3 if I remember correctly.
After the game, we stopped by the rest room and two other Bama fans, college students, were in there. They high fived each other and said "We came, we saw, we kicked their ass!" My son looked at me and said, "That's a pretty good saying, ain't it daddy?"
I remember grinning and saying, "Yeah, but don't let your momma hear you say it!"
Good times.
