Texas waited too long to crown him.

I never bought that anyway. People here in Texas had no idea about Muschamp except for how he performed at UT. I think they gave him that title to keep him a few extra years and justify paying him as much as they did.

Major Applewhite is the guy they want to take over for Brown. And since Brown will be around another 5 years, most likely, I think Applewhite will be the guy they start to groom.

I have never understood the "Coach in waiting" idea. I think at big time schools, they should hire proven head coaches. With Muschamp never having the pressures of being a head coach, you don't really know how he would respond. He may turn out to be great though, I guess you've gotta start somewhere (just usually at smaller tier schools and not the SEC).

Being reported now he's off to UF as well (to be OC). The asst. coaches offices at UT are going to be vacant come Monday morning if this keep up.

I'm not sure Muschamp is head coach material just yet. He still hasn't really settled down. That energy and such is great as a coordinator, I'm not sure it will work as the head coach but we will see. My gut says UF will be looking for a new head coach in 3-5 years, give or take.

That being said, I wish him the best of luck. He's a bright young coach who has the opportunity of a lifetime. Here's to him proving me wrong.

texas is gonna implode...

They already did that this year.

I guess we'll see what kind of coach Mac Brown is if he can hold it together, make a good hire to replace Muschamp, then take all those 5 star athletes and compete for the NC in the next couple of years.

Personally, I like Brown. I'd like to see him get back on track and continue to be successful at Texas.

The whole coach-in-waiting this is ridiculous, I totally agree, joeman

I think the NCAA pretty much killed that when they put recruiting limits on "Head Coaches in Waiting." Word around here was that the rest of the Big 12 pushed for it to hurt Texas. They were certainly the only major team that had that situation coming into this year and Muschamp is a great recruiter.

It works better if it's handled like it was in Wisconsin and Northwestern where the head coach and administration agree that an assistant will be groomed for the position. Of course in Northwestern's case Randy Walker died before they planned on making the change.

There are three hurdles that he has to prove that he can handle before I stop thinking that this is good for us.

1) Managing the unique duties falling solely to the HC. Muschamp has had great mentors, but the runner still has to meet the road.

2) He has to show that he can let his coaches coach. I'm recalling Mike Shula and the rumors of micro-managing what was a staff with somethink like 4-5 guys who had been an HC themselves at some point.

3) Create a complimentary answer for the Offenisive side of the ball.
