LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Alabama freshman pitcher Montana Fouts is one of 10 finalists for the Schutt Sports/NFCA Division-I Freshman of the Year, announced Thursday.
After being selected to the initial top-25 list earlier this season, Fouts made the most-recent cut to 10 finalists for the award. She is one of five pitchers on the list and one of just two athletes from the Southeastern Conference, joined by Tennessee pitcher Ashley Rogers.
Earlier this week, Fouts was named the SEC Freshman of the Year, the ninth in Alabama history and the first since Alexis Osorio in 2015. She is 14-3 this season with a 1.00 ERA, which leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally. She has 142 strikeouts over 126.1 innings, has thrown five shutouts and has also picked up five saves. Ranked victories this season include Arizona, Georgia, Florida and two against Minnesota. She earned five weekly honors from the SEC, including a program-record four Freshman of the Week accolades.
The list will be further trimmed to three finalists on May 21, with the winner announced during the Women's College World Series banquet in Oklahoma City on May 28.
Fouts and her Crimson Tide teammates open play at the 2019 SEC Softball Tournament in College Station, Texas tonight at 8 p.m. CT against the winner of the Georgia vs. Arkansas game.
