I've always liked Coach Leach from afar. Never followed him close but he's known for losing games he's favored in around the gambling circuit. I agree with @BamaBoyJosh , this is a homerun hire for them.

JMO but Mike has been able to take average talent and win at two schools.

Literally, that's the mindset behind the Air Raid offense. What I find crazy looking back is seeing Mumme and Leach developing this system when they really didn't have that many teams in the eastern division that were recruiting juggernauts. The biggest, Florida under Spurrier, was beginning to trend down at the time as well.

One thing for sure, they weren't fighting Louisville a lot at the time. In state they were going up against John L Smith most of the time.

He also took a QB that was a third-stringer at Troy and made him a Heisman Candidate and eventual NFL starter, too.

Yep. Backwater locales, perennial backseats to more dominant conference opponents, required to do more with less in terms of personnel and facilities.

I think it's a great hire for MSU. However, Leach will have some eye openings on multiple Saturdays. Defense isn't a priority in the Big12 or Pac12.
