For years, many college football coaches held out freshmen from competition, and they got the opportunity of having five years of coaching. Talking about that subject, Gophers coach Tim Brewster said: "The days of wholesale redshirting freshmen are over, and I think for the most part, the guys that are going to definitely redshirt from this point forward are the big guys: the offensive linemen, the defensive linemen. But, the skill players, the athletes, are going to be on the field. They help with special teams, and there's just a number of different ways that the young guys can help your football team." -- Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Especially if that young guy is going to be gone to the NFL in 3 years anyway.--252BAMA

Obviously it makes no sense to "shirt" a guy who will be leaving for the NFL in three years anyway, if he can help you. Still, out of last season's banner recruiting class we redshirted somewhere around half of them, and I really expect fewer freshmen to see the field early this year for us because our depth and talent level have improved.

There are just too many incoming freshmen that are already big and fast enough physically coming out of high school to make a difference these days. Used to, high school seniors were still small and not fully developed, but with today's training regimins, these kids are just plain bigger and faster. Even 15 years ago when I graduated, we had some big guys that were no where near as big and developed as these kids today. Look at Julio, there wasn't anyone in the state of Alabama in any sport that was built like him at his age, with speed, too.
