The Oklahoma Sooners made their road to the College Football Playoff a lot more difficult on Saturday, losing to heated rival Texas 48-45 in the Red River Showdown.
Though the Big 12 isn’t exactly known for strong defenses, that terrible performance from the Sooners was apparently the last straw.
According to a report from 247Sports, the decision has been made to relieve DC Mike Stoops of his duties:

Mike Stoops is out as OU’s defensive coordinator, OUInsider.com has been able to confirm. His replacement isn’t yet official, as a source said “Riley will make that known soon.”​

Following the latest poor defensive performance, the much-maligned coordinator met with head coach Lincoln Riley and OU President James Gallogly to have a serious discussion. It turns out that serious discussion ended up being the decision that Stoops is out.​

Stoops has been Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator since 2012, but there have been a number of bad Oklahoma defensive performances in recent years.
Stoops’s brother, Mark, currently serves as Kentucky’s head coach.

A little off topic, but I wonder how long we keep some of our coaches with the success we are having this year. Besides the kicking game and several defensive series, we have been impressive! The talking heads are blowing up Enos and Locksley a lot!

I believe it was the DB for Baylor during Art's run when asked how they practiced their defense against these Big 12 spread teams. His comments were something along....'we spend most of our time working our goal line defense".

OU had a defensive coordinator? I guess that means they had at least 11 defensive players? Hrmmmpfff....go figure. I never would have thought it. I thought for sure the only way Texas could score 40+ points was if there wasn't any one on the defensive side of the field?
