🏈 Mike Slive: SEC will decide soon about starting own TV network

Paving the way for a likely SEC network, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive confirmed today the conference is in "significant negotiations" with its television partners that will continue for the next month. Slive described a channel as a "serious option." "We hope to decide what our future is going to look like, certainly by the end of the year, maybe sooner," Slive said.

The SportsBusiness Journal reported
the SEC's negotiations with ESPN for a new channel are nearing the final stages for an expected August 2014 launch. Charlotte-based ESPN Regional Television will likely have a significant role in the channel and ESPN would control almost all of the SEC's marketing rights, according to the report.

"I expect that our television revenue will reflect the quality play in our league," said Slive, whose league has won the past six BCS championships.

Slive said the SEC factors in several goals when considering its own network: to become as widely distributed as possible, if not the nation's most distributed league; obtaining significant revenue; and having the opportunity to "talk about who we are."
