LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech has fired football coach Mike Leach.

The school handed a termination letter to Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, on Wednesday just before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach's suspension.

Liggett says the letter says Leach is "terminated with cause effective immediately."

Leach was suspended by the university on Monday while the school investigated allegations that he mistreated an injured player.

Receiver Adam James alleges Leach twice confined him to small, dark spaces during practice after the player was diagnosed with a concussion. James is the son of ESPN college football analyst Craig James.

Texas Tech plays Michigan State on Saturday in the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.

Leach led the Red Raiders to the best season in program history last year, going 11-2, but he and the university were at odds for months over negotiations for a contract extension. In February, Leach and the school agreed to a five-year, $12.7 million deal that would have kept him in Lubbock through 2013.

Convenient that they fired him today while he is in litigation to continue coaching during the bowl game. Funny how it saves them almost a million dollars. Sure seems to work out good for them.

The whole thing stinks.

Is Adam James afraid of the dark or something? I mean, there are coaches mistreating players and then there are players being pansies. But I guess firng their coach so they can save money counts as a cause.

on a related note, I am glad the other SEC schools got firey with there coaches last year. Theres a guy I dont want to play every year at some powerhouse

TT was very unhappy with Leach being interested in other coaching jobs, so this gave them the excuse to do what they wanted. TT can be happy that they've gone back into the world of nobody cares about you.

Joker Phillips was named coach in waiting at Kentucky and they stated that Phillips was the new head coach.
