| FTBL Memphis joins USF in scheduling a 2-for-1 with a high profile opponent

Always thought if big 12 was looking to expand its viewing circle that memphis was one of good choices. Bring big 12 football into Tennessee. And look at a mid level school from Louisiana.....2 big football states.....and not to bad of driving circle...much better than west va.... a small state that’s really not a football state...kinda stupid....

Barely a University, I don't see Memphis bringing the academic resume a P5 conference would want in spite of the school having some strong programs. As I recall its law school carried a reputation.

Academics. So wvu brings it? More than a Memphis. Terry. Its viewers for tv contracts. Its money for programs by expanding viewers
Tennessee ( for Memphis) has much more potential than a west va ( for wvu).
A Louisiana school would have added a bunch also Could take a while but does

Eh Memphis isn't even the most popular College team in the city of Memphis. Probably a draw between 10rc and Ole Mrs.

Can't imagine Big12 seeing any increase in viewership or really anything positive by adding Memphis. It is almost a cult following

It takes awhile but Memphis has the potential....especially with ole ms and tn dragging bottom...but moot point...now....big 12 knows best i guess...

Memphis is in the same situation as Louisville with their transition. Academic requirements would have to be change to fit Big 12 requirements. It will come into play. They, the Big12, lost two of their AAU schools—in this case, the good one: Association of American Universities—when they lost A&M and MIssouri to the SEC. That grew the total in the SEC to four and cut the Big 12 to two. It was a driving factor in those two schools being invited to the SEC as well as a driving force behind the consideration of Rice for Big 12 membership.

To your point about viewership...

The Big12 has its partnership for media rights with ESPN. There is no more room to "grow" from that point. If you're going to watch it's going to be through their platform. Or, it's through the Longhorn Network. This includes third tier broadcast rights which are now held on ESPN+.

Houston was and is the natural choice for Big 12 stardom. But short of Louisianna, no one does petty politics better than Austin. While we're on the subject, Rice, SMU, were permanent residents in the old SWC longer than Houston and would be natural opponents to join up again. Chasing down teams like WVU to join up are bad fits and almost impossible to work up a rivalry.

Colorado and Nebraska, Missouri were old Big 8 teams that grew weary of Texas justice and skedaddled when they had enough. In any direction, it's hard to see the Big 12 picking up any teams that could come close to challenging at the top. Which shouldn't be the point to start with.
