Media reacts to stunning Old Dominion upset of Virginia Tech

Entering Saturday's home matchup with the No. 13 Virginia Tech Hokies, Old Dominion was winless. The Monarchs had begun the 2018 season with losses to Liberty, FIU and Charlotte, a team that has only been in the FBS since 2015.

None of those teams are on the level of Virginia Tech, which appeared to be a legitimate Atlantic Coast Conference contender through two games. Or so we thought.

The Hokies, 27-point favorites, were upset by Old Dominion in a 49-35 win. The Monarchs, members of the Conference USA, had previously been 0-9 all time in games against Power Five opponents.

Virginia Tech came into the matchup 2-0 following convincing wins over Florida State and William & Mary. The Hokies had a Week 3 game against East Carolina canceled due to Hurricane Florence.

Virginia Tech looked very much like a team that had not played in a week, at least when it came to defense. The Hokies surrendered 632 total yards of offense to Old Dominion during the stunning upset. Virginia Tech was able to put up 600 yards on offense, but that wasn't enough to stop the Monarchs from securing the victory.

Is this true that VIRGINIA TECH is losing to OLD DOMINION 42 35 with 5 min ti go ? I can’t believe it /I didn’t know they played D-1 football WOW
ESPN's Dick Vitale didn't even know Old Dominion was in the FBS. You can't really blame him, as the Monarchs did not give fans many reasons to take notice this season. That is no longer the case.

Some more perspective here from @ESPNStatsInfo If Old Dominion can hold on against Virginia Tech, they would pull the biggest upset by an FBS team over an ACC opponent in the last 40 seasons.

Old Dominion definitely pulled off the upset of the season thus far, and apparently the biggest upset for an ACC team dating back 40 years. It was the first ever win over a ranked opponent by the Monarchs
