A year ago, Alabama coach Nick Saban was still trying to identify his quarterback. Now, heās trying to protect him. AJ McCarron led the Crimson Tide to the national title as a sophomore, but his development since then has impressed Saban.
āWe ran a draw in the scrimmage and Cyrus (Kouandjio, the Tideās left tackle) missed his block,ā Saban told reporters after Tuesdayās practice. āAJ said, āIf you make that block, that would have been out the gate.āā
It says two things about McCarron. First, more than a play breaking down, he knew instantly why it broke down. Second, he didnāt hesitate to challenge a teammate. This is his offense. That wasnāt the case in the early part of the 2011 season.
āI guess last year, I was the young one looking up to the older guys, and now I have some younger guys and Iām the older guy,ā the junior said when asked about the difference in communication with his receiver corps. Actually, it has expanded throughout the offense.
āThereās a little more talking on my part ā and them listening ā and it was vice versa last year.
