📝 Massive defensive tackle Kendell Jones commits to Alabama

BONE: What it means: Kendall Jones

The commitment

Kendell Jones, Rivals100 defensive tackle from Shoemaker High School in Killeen, Texas, announced his commitment to Alabama on Friday evening after his spring game. He is the ninth commitment for the Crimson Tide in the 2016 class. He was recruited by defensive line coach Bo Davis. Jones picked Alabama instead of Baylor, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M. He attended Alabama's A-Day in April where it was likely the Tide took the lead for his signature.

Alabama continues its recent run of success in the Lone Star State which has included five-stars A'Shawn Robinson and Tony Brown along with 2015 signess/Rivals100 members Kendall Sheffield and Deionte Thompson. This is a big commitment for Alabama as the coaching staff continues to lure away some of the best players from the state of Texas.

The player
Jones was ranked one of the top defensive performers at the Rivals Camp in Dallas.

"The 6-foot-4, 365-pound Jones is one of the most dangerous looking defensive linemen to ever come out of the high school ranks," said Josh Helmholdt of Rivals.com. "That 365 is a big number, but he is just a huge-framed kid and most of that weight is muscle. Even with an outstanding, and big group of offensive linemen, no one could stop Jones from getting to where he wanted to go. He can bull-rush his way into the backfield at will, but in camp settings where bull-rushes are frowned upon, he has started to develop a rip move that is effective."

Jones can take charge of a game on just his massive size, but he has a lot of talent, strong and powerful. He has very good quickness for his size and freakishly athletic. There are different aspects he can improve like hands, staying low when coming off the ball and overall developing his understanding of the game. He doesn't have a lot of bad weight, but can still afford to shed a few pounds.

Alabama fans can definitely get exited about this commitment. He is an elite player, and certainly someone who can make a major impact in the Tide's defense in the future.

The numbers
Jones becomes the second defensive tackle commitment for the Tide joining Raekwon Davis, three-star from Meridian High School in Miss. The emergence of Davis as an elite prospect gives Alabama two mammoth defensive tackles in the class. Davis stands 6-foot-7, 315-pounds and Jones is a massive 6-foot-5, 360-pounds.

Both are recruited as defensive linemen though it's possible Davis makes a move to the offensive side of the ball. Alabama will continue to target several defensive linemen especially on the interior- nose and defensive tackle. Alabama will have Rashan Gary, five-star defensive tackle from Catholic High School in Paramus, N.J., on campus for camp in early June. He is rated the No.1 defensive tackle in the country. Mario Cristobal is his lead recruiter.

Dexter Lawrence, five-star from Wake Forest High School in N.C., and Derrick Brown, five-star from Lanier High School in Sugar Hill, Ga., will also visit this summer. Lawrence and Brown have Alabama in their top five.

A few recognizable names who made strong impressions during the spring include Rashard Lawrence, Rivals100 from Neville High School in Monroe, La., and Michail Carter, Rivals100 from Jackson High School in Ga.

Alabama is also still heavily recruiting Benito Jones, Rivals100 from Wayne County High School in Waynesboro, Miss. The Ole Miss commitment committed to Alabama last year before flipping to the Rebels. Alabama remains in pursuit, and his family remains big fans of the Crimson Tide.

Alabama will not take many more defensive tackles with two commitments in the fold. Two more is probably the max number.

Note this is strictly about defensive tackles. Defensive ends are not included.
