There have been many a discussion about allowing college sport's athletes to transfer to another school without sitting out a year. Looks like we're not that far off from free agency taking root.

Think about the number of basketball transfers we see already. What, probably 350-370 last season? It's going to change that game in a heartbeat.

I'm wondering how much of a Pandora's Box this is opening when it comes to "tampering."

Saban addressed the "tampering" in his presser today. We all know where that comment was directed!!! Straight to Athens, Ga.

I seriously can't see this rule impacting Bama as much as other programs. I'm 100% sure some assistants and maybe even CNS tell kids things they want to hear regarding playing time, depth, outlook, etc... BUT - I think they're also open and honest about the talent on the roster and what it's going to take to get there. Most schools just flat out make promises and tell a guy anything and everything they want to hear and figure they'll deal with the consequences later if it doesn't work out... Knowing transferring can be a PIA.

Obviously there will still be Bama transfers and bad fits... But I've never seen a high level program like this outside of Duke Bball that targets kids who genuinely want to be pushed /challenged/love competition. And a lot of just high character kids with great stories. I can tell you that the schools in competition with Bama will be making some serious promises to overcome what CNS does and it will only cause more issues down the road with this rule.

@Tidestalker I don't look at this proposal in terms of football. Sure, we'll see a little impact here and there but I'm sure the staff will adapt.

What I was specifically referring to is the number of transfers we're seeing in basketball, today. We're talking several hundred per year. I want to say I saw a number a few weeks ago that was in the 370's for this season alone. Now, if the penalty of sitting a year is removed from the equation what happens to that number? In my opinion, it'll only increase.

(It's also my opinion--voiced here on more than one occasion--that a primary cause of all these transfers in basketball have little to do with what they are being told on the recruiting trail but what they've been told coming up through the high school and AAU ranks.)

Now, that begs one question. If this proposal is passed, how well will the different coaches around campus handle the new environment--specifically, Avery Johnson?

Transferring is so crazy in hoops that I don't know how many more guys could actually transfer... lol

But seriously, at this point it seems like about 50% of the guys on scholarship that don't make the rotation jet out. The year of sitting out doesn't seem to bother them anyway... And frankly, why should it?! I tell all my guys to use their red shirt year, take summer classes, and leave after 5 years and 4 summers of credits with or close to a masters degree. It's a no brainer IMO.

Bottom line is you can't use talent unless you get it on campus. I don't see hoops recruiting changing much at all, because coaches will sell their soul for their top target regardless. They will try to keep the guys happy they want to keep and let the disappointments go. On to the next one

NCAA will likely have to change some academic success rates though... But we'll see.

College basketball is a mess and has been for some time. As far as guys running off to the NBA, that ain't working either. The D-league is filled to the top with great players waiting for years for a sniff of the big times. So much so the NBA commissioner doesn't even want to see the top players for at least 2 years out of high school. I wouldn't think it would take much tinkering to bring college basketball to its knees.
