šŸˆ Mack Brown's comments on Transfer portal

The players needed part of the pie and I really don’t see anything players have done that is different than hot coaches do all the time.

When you have coaches making 11 mil a year the players deserves more than just a scholly and some snacks
Boy how times have changed. Granted I’m old but the scholarship was a Godsend to those of us in my generation. There’s no way a lot of us could have attended college without them. Coaches certainly didn’t make $11 million a year but they were compensated better than most small business owners and they made more in a year than most of our dad’s made in a lifetime (most moms didn’t work outside the home). Though I don’t recall any jealousy or anyone begrudging what they made. Like I said players of my generation were just thankful to be able to play ball and earn a degree. For many, they were the first in their family to do so. We also understood that not everyone starts but you still had to work hard and be ready. Loyalty meant much more then and commitment actually meant you were committed. Players back then learned a lot about life and how to preserve through hardship and failure. Today, everyone gets a trophy in youth sports and now in college if you can’t earn a starting spot, you leave. And if you don’t earn a starting spot there, you transfer again. And bowl games were a huge deal for the players and for the fans … and six wins didn’t get you close. I could go on and on but all of you my age understand and those who are younger think we’re out of touch dinosaurs. No matter … truth is truth and in regards to college football, the NIL, the transfer portal and now the 12 team playoff will destroy what was once the greatest of all sports. The feel good, politically correct knee jerk implementation of the NIL like all such policies never account for the unintended consequences. And just like with government programs, once they begin, they can never be stopped. The genie will not go back in the bottle. What a shame.

I’m 45 and getting a scholarship meant the world to me and I was first in my family to go to college let alone graduate. Big difference between me and all the other sports in college was I was able to make money in my sport and get endorsements (rodeo), a couple of years before NIL college kids in rodeo were able to take their chance at the largest one day rodeo (in prize money) for a million dollars then they had a chance to win a cool 100,000, so it’s about time the rest of college sports caught up.

As for transfer ruining anything, we disagree. Coaches have been able to leave whenever they felt like, hell Saban jumped around to several places before settling on Bama, if coaches can do it without penalty then the kids should be able to too.

To be honest, I didn’t know they gave rodeo scholarships. Though now they give bass fishing scholarships. Wish they’d had that as an option when I was leaving high school. I couldn’t have gone to college without my scholarship either. My point was we were appreciative of what we got and didn’t begrudge others getting to do things we couldn’t do and we didn’t leave if we didn’t get what we wanted. It’s a generational thing. As for my contention the transfer portal, the NIL and the 12 team playoff is ruining what was the greatest sport of them all … I stand by position. Let’s revisit this in 5 years or 10 years and we will see how much everyone likes NFL lite.
