LSU has been in contact with Alabama defensive coordinator Kriby Smart for its open defensive coordinator position, according to the Baton Rouge Advocate.

Smart, 39, is in his seventh season with the Crimson Tide and said during the Sugar Bowl that he would only be interested in the right head coaching job.

He’s the second-highest paid assistant coach in the country at $1.35 million. Alabama does not allow assistants to speak to the media to answer questions but twice a year.

LSU is nearing a two-week search that has had several names come up. Smart has an LSU connection from coaching the defensive backs there in 2004 under coach Nick Saban.

I'm sure Jimmy Sexton called Kirby and had a hard time telling him that Miles had made contact to gauge his interest in the DC job there at LSwho while not bursting out in laughter!! CKS probably got a good chuckle too. If Chavis left because that weak ass offense wasn't putting points on the board to rest his defense, why would Miles expect Kirby to want that headache?

Report: LSU interested in Kirby Smart

LSU officials have been in contact with University of Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart's representative to gauge the interest in a lateral move to become the Tigers' defensive coordinator, according to a report out of Baton Rouge.

Ross Dellenger and Scott Rabalais of The Advocate in Baton Rouge, La., reported Monday afternoon that LSU has reached out to Smart and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker for the school's open position recently vacated when John Chavis made a lateral move to Texas A&M.

The 39-year-old Smart made $1.35 million in 2014 in his eighth season at Alabama. His contract calls for a $72,000 buyout if he leaves to go elsewhere other than as a head coach.

Smart turned down Georgia, his alma mater, after the 2009 season, opting to stay in Tuscaloosa. He just completed his seventh season as the Crimson Tide's defensive coordinator, fielding one of the nation's premiere defenses annually. Smart won the Broyles Award in 2009, given annually to the nation's top assistant coach.

He interviewed for the Auburn head coaching vacancy following the 2012 season.

Last month when asked if he still had the desire to become a head coach, Smart replied, "always."

In the summer of 2014 during a radio interview with Atlanta radio station 680 The Fan, Smart said he's open to the right opportunity.

"I could finish my career being a defensive coordinator and say, 'Hey, he's Mickey Andrews (Florida State's long-time defensive coordinator under Bobby Bowden),'" Smart said. "I'd be happy knowing that I had success doing it and I was the best I could be at my job.

"If the opportunity knocks, then so be it."

Chavis exited LSU following the Tigers' Music City bowl game loss to Notre Dame, leaving to become Texas A&M's defensive coordinator.

That is exactly what I was thinking.
