šŸˆ Longhorn fan here, just curious

So it's the off-season right.. and while it's the slowest time of the year for college football this usually is a time for relative optimism throughout the landscape as teams close out the recruiting period, maybe they've just hired a new coach or coaches, and we look forward to spring practice and... at least for most of the college football bluebloods there's a level of anticipation and optimism that good things are ahead. Couple different topics have come up in a forum I visit regularly that follows UT and long story short it got me wondering..

What's it like to be an Alabama fan really? Sustaining the level of success that y'all have for a decade is hard for me to fathom. I remember the first time in my lifetime Texas had got to the national championship game.. I was young.. in high school and.. it was and frankly really still is such a big deal for our fan base. We were so proud, Longhorn nation and just football fans across the state, especially Texas high school football coaches and associates (which is a really big deal here) that we had reached that pinnacle. We reached it in 2009 again, as you well know, and we came up short but we were still excited to have been there.

I guess what I'm saying is college football is just different.. I imagine it's kind of like soccer to a lot of European or South American countries.. there's so much that goes into it.. culture, school and state pride for flagship programs in their respective states, history, tradition, fans, tailgates, bragging rights, family, etc..

So what's it like being you guys? I mean honestly.. no need to be brash or arrogant or facetious, I'm just trying to be real. Hopefully you guys can be real with me.

Does it get old when you win what 5 national championships in ten years including some years where you win 3 out of 4 and now 2 out of the last 3.. I just wonder if it takes any of the luster or enjoyment or appreciation out of it when it's like if you win the national championship it's not a good year.. it's a year that you merely meet expectations.. and if you don't win it, it's a let down.

You guys are on a run that's just incredible. It's hard to fathom getting to the mountaintop so many times when there's so many things that work against you once success.. that kind of success is reached. Complacency, entitlement, coaches leaving, guys gunning for you, the whole 9.. Nick Saban.. to me.. is the best coach in any sport in any era period.

So how about it, what's it like rooting.. especially if it's your Alma mater.. for a program who's had this much success in a span of 10 or 11 years?

take this for what it's worth, but your email address was flagged by someone that's the reason your post went into a queue... I hope it's not for trolling forums.

Thanks for the heads up. That's perplexing, I wonder what would be the cause of that.. I rarely even visit other forums and this is the first time I think I've ever, or at least tried to, participate in any kind of discourse.

How do you explain expectations that no one else has? Texas won a national championship for the first time in 35 years when they beat USC. During that drought Alabama won four. Players come into the program with the expectation of winning a championship, not "improving on last year." This expectation spreads to the fan base. Yes, there have been some lean years, but everyone focused on what to fix, not the thought that we had a good run.

I hear you, and I acknowledged that fact, that the expectations for you guys are to win the championship. It's just hard for me to fathom living in a world that anything less than a national championship is a disappointment. Seems like when the standard is so high and you've won so many titles there could be the potential of taking the success for granted but that's from an outside perspective.

As an alumnus, I have seen and been a part of a roller coaster ride. I experienced the highest as a student in '92 and then A LOT of bumps until CNS hit the scene in Jan of '07. This run has been a joy to watch. I know it will eventually come to a end or at least slow down once CNS leaves for Lake Burton.
I guess you need to think of it as a fine wine or a good bourbon, sip it slow and enjoy!

It really is kind of hard to explain the excitement and expectations of UA fans every season in this state where we have no professional teams to pull for. But it is great fun for fans to ponder in each off season whether up and coming players and freshmen will buy into "The Process" and do wharever it takes to prepare themselves to play winning football every play of every game. There is no other feeling like it. The only way to know how it feels is to CONVERT over to the good guys and feel the excitement for yourself. We have fans in every state, many with no ties to Alabama what so ever. So come on over, there's always room for new and more fans.

@DFWHorn1207, I have been a Bama fan all my life. I remember Joe Namath as Bama's QB in the 60s. I'll try to give you my perspective, and again, I can only speak for myself. I look forward to each season with much optimism, as most do. There are usually questions about who will start at what position, but it never feels like we'll struggle to have a "good" season. It was like that with Bear Bryant. The question, in this era, is will we be good enough to make the playoffs and can we win it all. Texas has a history of top ranked teams, and I'm sure if you talk to the older Longhorn fans, they can tell you what it was like in those days under coaches like Royal. Herman may get you guys back to that level, time will tell. Thanks for visiting.

As a guy that grew up a Georgia fan before he moved to Tuscaloosa and attended Alabama, I can say it is simply amazing from what I was used to. Every single year Georgia came into the season with optimism, good recruiting classes, and solid coaching that had us excited about a title run. Only to never hit paydirt and finding ways to blame other things.

I came to Tuscaloosa the year of the Notre Dame Championship season, so I hadn't experienced the jubilation of Coach Saban's first two. I was so excited to be a part of a major university as it was a goal of mine to accomplish. I was there for every game, took in the sights and sounds by throwing tailgates and just enjoying the ride. It was already established that we do not expect to lose, getting top recruits, and it is something simply amazing to be a part of. After five Championships in the last nine years you can clearly see us as a spoiled fanbase. We get upset not having the #1 recruiting class, we think the world is falling after a loss, and a lot even turned on our 25-2 Sophomore quarterback after the Auburn loss. All that being said, we have been blessed to experience this success. A lot of us empty our wallets to the program and bend over backwards for our boys. We may be a little cocky and expect a lot, but being a Georgia fan for years growing up, all fanbases have the same type of fans, it's just that some schools like Alabama actually walk the walk. I'm very proud of my university and apologize to noone for kicking their asses week in week out. We love our teams and our school. Roll Tide.

It is long running that we are spoiled. Yes there have been our times in the desert but think about this. Since Alabama first won 10 games in a single season in 1920, only one head coach (Ears Whitworth) has went his career without winning at least 10 games at least one time. That's how spoiled we have been for a long time. But, the recent run is something else. Saban has won 10 games each of the last 10 years. Yes they play a lot more games now, but that is still amazing with the parity out there now. It is hard to be a fan of that and not get to the point where you expect to win the big one each year. I have to remember Dubose and the 1999 season. A season that had us thinking we were going to be back in everything again, only to see the 2000 season go to hell in a handbasket. That keeps me in the moment as much as anything. Enjoy the ride for now and when it comes to an end, which it will, just be happy to say you were there for it.
