After spending two years in Detroit without ever playing in a regular-season game, Michael Williams will now get a shot in New England.

The Lions have traded Williams to the Patriots, Ben Volin of the Boston Globereports. There is no word on what exactly the Lions are getting back, but it is believed to be for a conditional late-round draft pick.

The 6-foot-6, 304-pound Williams was a blocking tight end at Alabama whom the Lions chose in the seventh round of the 2013 NFL draft. After missing his rookie season with a hand injury, Williams switched to offensive tackle last year but never got on the field.

It’s unclear what the Patriots’ plans for Williams are, but he’s the kind of versatile athlete Bill Belichick likes, and he’ll provide some offensive depth in New England.
