Many hard hitters emerge at San Jose scrimmage but not a starting quarterback

After a two-hour scrimmage Saturday at Spartan Stadium, first-year San Jose State coach Mike MacIntyre was sure of two things: His roster features plenty of hard hitters, and he has a promising group of athletic freshmen.

However, the all-important quarterback position remains in flux, and the three-way battle for the starting job didn't get any clearer Saturday.

Senior Jordan La Secla took the first snap, and freshman Dasmen Stewart showed the most raw talent, but both players turned the ball over on their first possession.

Junior college transfer Matt Faulkner had the biggest play, a 37-yard strike to speedy freshman Chandler Jones that set up the first of five offensive touchdowns on the day. But Faulkner struggled during red-zone drills, twice underthrowing receivers.

The three quarterbacks saw equal time, but MacIntyre said he will have to look at film before determining whether anyone broke from the pack.

"All of them made some plays, but we had a couple of drops that would have been bigger plays for us," he said.

La Secla, starter of eight games in 2009, and Stewart both had big plays wiped out by drops. La Secla's best throw day was a 20-yard dart to Jalal Beauchman's back shoulder that was dropped. Stewart rolled to his left in a two-minute drill and threw a perfect strike down the sideline, but a wide-open Jones couldn't hold on.

"(Stewart) did some good things. He did everything he's supposed to do,

so you can't give him a minus (for that drop)," MacIntyre said. "If it's caught, that's a huge play."

# The drop was one of the few mistakes by Jones, a 5-foot-9 redshirt freshman who lined up in the slot for most of the scrimmage. Jones, a former high school track star in Los Angeles, had no trouble getting separation from defenders and caught a scrimmage-high nine balls.

Freshman receiver Noel Grigsby also made an impression, catching four balls before getting hurt. Grigsby was leveled by safety Alex Germany on a crossing pattern and was taken to the trainer's room to get treatment for a right-forearm contusion.

"We've got a couple freshmen who made some big plays, and then they dropped some balls that could have been more big plays," MacIntyre said of his receiving corps. "They just need get some more experience."

# The running game, ranked 117th in the nation in 2009, appears to be headed in the right direction. Returners Brandon Rutley and Lamon Muldrow teamed with transfer David Freeman and freshman Ben Thompson to score five rushing touchdowns.

"We have depth right now, and we have more than one guy that can produce," Rutley said.

# Cornerback Brandon Driver returned a first-quarter interception 63 yards for a score, and freshman defensive end Foloi Vae later dropped into coverage to pick off a pass from freshman Blake Jurich. The defense also forced two fumbles.

"Coach Mac is always talking about getting three take-aways, so that was huge," defensive end Travis Johnson said.

Haveing lived in that weather.....there is no way in Hell they can adjust in time and that's exactly where they think they are. HELL.
It's going to be 85-90 with 90-100% humidity @ kick. They'll be so awe struck by everything @ UA and when they get a look @ our 12th man......
101,000 if them.....they'll mostly be confused. the noise will be unlike anything these kids have ever heard. I don't care what McIntyre does....or how many times he blasts sweet home alabama over the pa the week before.....he'll never get them prepaired for this. Not in a million years.
But i don't think we're going to beat them as much as they'll beat themselvs mentally.

I heard some similar comments when Hawaii came to town. Now Hawaii was a much better team then. Anyway they had a shot to win it on the last drive but got intercepted.

I'm not counting this as a W just yet. Do I think the Tide wins? Yes.

I'm with you. All that extra "stuff" just gives them more momentum. Once that ball kicks off all that other stuff won't matter. The heat and humidity could play a huge factor though. We should have a much better team and should be much better conditioned. Our 2nd or 3rd string should be able to beat them alone, but last time I checked should never got us anywhere. That said, I'll have 1st game jitters but I don't plan on sweating this one out.

Its getting closer boys and I am ready. Bring on the Spartans, we can handle 300 of them. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!
it'll be more like less than 100, sorry to disappoint y'all in the lack of numbers going out to 'Bama. y'all will play the team but there isnt going to be a huge contingent of spartan fans coming to the game, nor will the, "The Pride of The Spartans, The Spartan Marching Band" be there, mostly due to the fact that the AD, the University, and the economy hold us pretty low on the totem pole. we've been getting numerous calls from Hotels, charter Buses, and catering companies hoping to do business down in your neck of the woods, sad to say but we will not be there due to lack of support but we thank y'all in 'Bama for the hospitality and the privilege to play the No. 1 team in the nation none the less. Too bad man. IMO, some of the band should always travel to away games.

Taking on a #1: For the second time, San Jose State faces a pre-season #1-ranked team when the Spartans play Alabama. In 2000, San Jose State opened the season at #1-Nebraska.
Five times, the Spartans began a season against a top-20 ranked team. Besides the 2000 game at Nebraska, the Spartans lost at #17-Stanford to open 1997, at #19-California in 1992, at #6-Florida in 1991, and at #16-Stanford in 1969.

The last time San Jose State defeated a nationally-ranked foe on the road was in 1980. The Spartans trailed #9-ranked Baylor, 15-0 in the second quarter, and came back for a 30-22 victory. Baylor, with linebacker Mike Singletary, safety Vann McElroy and running backs Walter Abercrombie and Dennis Gentry, went on to win the Southwest Conference championship.

Depth chart notes: Of the 56 players listed on the August 25 San Jose State depth chart, eight players (four offense and four defense) are in line for their first major college start. Wide receivers Chandler Jones and Noel Grigsby, a pair of redshirt freshmen; offensive tackle David Quessenberry and running back Wade O’Neill are the offensive players. Tackle Anthony Larceval, linebacker Vince Buhagiar and defensive backs Brandon Driver and Alex Germany are the defensive players.
Kicker Harrison Waid and long snapper Ben Zorn are likely to see their first major college action at their respective positions.
As many as 27 of the 56 players on the depth chart could play in their first major college contest against Alabama.
Fifteen of the 27 players to sign a National Letter-of-Intent in February 2010 are on the depth chart.

Welcome to site, SpartanMedic.

I just ran across these stats from the SJS 2009 season. very telling.

2009 Fun Stats:
- Second quarter scoring: Opponents 161 – San Jose State 44
- Rushing offense: Opponents 259.2 yards per game – San Jose State 76.7 yards per game

If i were Coach, (thankfully i'm not) but i would be very conservative with the O' this game and not reveil too much to PSU the 1st week.
Becuase i can see Mark riding and maybe Trent as well....riding pine after the 1st qtr.
If we keep it on the ground alone i see 300+ yards rushing alone.
Thier seconadary is probly the best thing they have defensivly. I don't think they can handel Julio & Maze.
Maze is quick. if he can get it clean & clear....that kid is GONE. I'm also wondering if SjS will try and double up on Julio.

I'm not counting this as a W just yet. Do I think the Tide wins? Yes.

But, let's not forget that that was in fact 2006, and that game was the beginning of the end of Mike Shula. We went 6-7 that season, and honestly, we were worse that year than the 4-9 team of 2003. So, a near loss to Hawaii at home was no surprise. Uhh.. what dark days those were!
